About the group & product - He kōrero e pā ana ki ōu mahi

To continue strengthening our content advantage, we launched Canva Creators in June 2020 - a platform which empowers everyone to submit their high-quality designs into the Canva content library. Our vision is to build the world’s best marketplace. Creators is a product in its hyper-growth phase on top of the exponentially growing company. While still at beta-launch, creators-published designs now contribute to more than 50% of usage by all Canva users, with over 500,000 templates added to the library from Creators in the last 3 months, a 500X YoY growth.

We believe Canva Creators has the potential to take Canva to the next level of scale for high-quality design content, and we want you to be central to that growth.

The scalability team is responsible for the continued health and improvement to our pre-publish design assistance and ML (Machine Learning) powered review system, which directly contributes to more and higher-quality Canva content. We are on a mission to ambitiously ramp up our review velocity through our suite of engineering solutions ranging from machine learning, automated creator education, improved tooling and much more. We want to set a world-class standard for boosting large volumes of quality user submitted content.

Be responsible for driving the product direction, providing technical guidance to the team, growing engineers and scaling the team to support the hyper growth of Creators product. Expect expansion in scope, team size, fun challenges and get ready to learn / grow with us during this hyper-growth phase of our product!

What you’ll do - Ōu Haepapa

  • Provide a combination of people and technical leadership, work alongside engineers and jump into the deep end of technical challenges when there is a need.
  • Develop and implement engineering strategies and roadmaps.
  • Cultivate a culture of communication, bridging the communication gap between teams, and within the group/organisation.
  • Coach 4-9 engineers (including but not limited to: coaching and growing the engineers, performance evaluations, helping define team culture and processes, own team hiring and scaling)
  • Be the technical face of the team, communicating with multi-functional leads and external partners to ensure alignment and coordination on projects.
  • Set up vision and mission for the team, influence technical strategy and provide leadership to your team, and work closely with product and design specialities to build a next-generation content review experience
  • Set up and run ongoing feedback sessions and initiatives, drive a code review culture, design showcases, and help improve our project delivery processes through retrospectives.

About you - He Kōrero Mōu

  • Coding proficiency at the level of a Senior Software Engineer with a specialisation in backend (Java, AWS, SQL / NOSQL database).
  • You have a bias for action, and are willing to take calculated risks to experiment quickly to support the product’s hyper growth.
  • You are able to sustainably empower people — having previously led successful teams of 4-9 members.
  • You understand the product life cycle, features, technical debt, QA, and supporting quality at speed. You will know when you need to push back, shielding the team from disruptions.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience of leading multi-functional partners and communicate effectively across other teams.
  • You have successfully delivered projects in a large-scale cloud based environment.
