Senior Engineering Manager - Infrastructure

The infrastructure group at Canva has grown to over 50 people.  These amazing individuals are responsible for everything from developer efficiency, security and site reliability through to deployment and chaos engineering.  As the platform continues to scale, we want to welcome an experienced engineering leader to ensure the team scales with it - focused on technical leadership, growing the team, and empowering every single team member to grow and develop their skills and experience.


  • Be responsible for growing and developing the infrastructure engineering division at Canva (currently 50 people), bringing on board world-class talent and nurturing the progression of current members within the team
  • Drive delivery of large-scale projects from ideation to completion within start-up time frames to ensure Canva’s overall reliability, performance, security, and stability
  • Take a customer-focused approach to technical leadership, working to strike a balance between company and team priorities
  • Stakeholder management across the entire business – product leads, group heads, and the founders
  • Be responsible for people leadership within the Infrastructure Group – mentoring, professional progression, and growth of your engineers
  • Working with other engineering leaders to ensure we continue improving code quality, technical mentorship, staffing, recruitment, and retention
  • Think ahead and build for the future as opposed to band-aid fixes for today – balancing the “getting things done” part of the job with long-term future-proofing of Canva’s infrastructure

Required Skills & Experience

  • A hands-on technical background with ideally five or more (5+) years in technical leadership
  • Proven experience delivering massive-scale infrastructure projects, ideally with experience on projects as impactful as moving from single to multi-region on AWS
  • Previous experience in a SaaS, eCommerce, or other B2B/B2C online product environment is beneficial
  • Proven experience developing software in AWS environments or comparable (Google Cloud, Azure) platforms, CI/CD pipelines, automation, and managing production infrastructure
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams of 30+ and contributing to their skills development and professional journeys
  • Familiarity with JVM web application infrastructure is beneficial
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; with the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds and with different professional needs
  • Be capable of leading from the front by example – promoting Canva’s values, no-blame mentality, and engineering values
