Product Designer - Design Automation

Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane – Full-time

Since Canva’s launch in August 2013 we have grown exponentially. We now support over 40 million monthly active users in 190 countries, and have helped create more than 2 billion designs.

We are one of the world’s fastest-growing technology companies, and we think we are only 1% of the way to achieving our goal – which is super exciting because there is so much more to do!

About the Design Automation Team

The Design Automation team is on a mission to make Canva the fastest and easiest design tool in the world! We are part of a larger group, tasked with looking after the overall editing experience on every device.

We’re driven to create ‘magical’ experiences for users, and to do this well we need to deeply understand who we’re designing for. As such, data science and user research is a huge part of our team’s focus.

Much of our work is exploratory and forward thinking – and our focus is not limited to a specific set of features or a particular area of the product. Our insights and discoveries often lead us to pursue projects that support other teams and groups. Curiosity, communication and collaboration are therefore critical to our team’s success!

About the Product Design Team

One of the principles of our design specialty is to ‘show the future’. As designers we transport the rest of the company into a future we’re yet to build. A big part of the role of a product designer at Canva is to be a visionary—visualising and reinventing the future of design for our users.

Product designers at Canva take the dream and make it something everyone can relate to and rally behind. We start from the very early stages: finding the right problem to tackle, exploring ideas for how to solve it and then refining it into a coherent solution.

Our product designers carry out research, brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, and collaboration with our engineers to ship great products. We are empathetic user advocates and respect our users’ opinions through interviews, usability testing, and data analysis, as well as wireframing, flowcharting, and journey mapping to show the different stages that customers go through as they come into contact with Canva.

What you’ll do

  • Your key focus will be striving for an easier and faster design experience, through smart defaults and automation. You’ll be a key driver to help achieve our vision to make Canva the easiest design tool in the world!
  • You’ll dive deep into the problem space of how we move Canva from a social media marketers tool, to the platform that small businesses, classrooms and larger organisations use for their work.
  • You’ll conduct user interviews to continuously learn about our diverse users – to improve Canva as we know it, but also to find new ways to add magic to the editing experience.
  • As the team's main source of user insights, you'll be responsible for making sure everyone understands our users. You’ll regularly and passionately share quotes, insights and learnings from your research back into the team, as well as the larger product group.
  • You’ll collaborate with other team members on new, exploratory ideas at a low fidelity level.
  • You’ll create high fidelity, functional design prototypes to test with users and communicate new features to the team and stakeholders.
  • You’ll collaborate with the other designers in the larger group to create simple solutions that solve not only for your immediate areas of focus, but also align with the overarching design system and long term goals of other teams.

Goals in the first 3 - 6 months

  • Collaborate closely with other team members to further embed user research and qualitative data into the way we design and build features.
  • Conduct your own research to better understand our users — how they use Canva and other tools in their daily lives and to get their ‘work’ done.
  • Translate research findings into ideas for product improvements and new features that directly meet the needs of real users.
  • Design, implement and test new features.

What we’re looking for

  • You’re an empathetic user advocate that values research and data analysis when it comes to designing modern solutions.
  • You thrive in a collaborative workplace; partnering with other designers, engineers, product managers, data analysts and other disciplines throughout the company.
  • You are excited by regularly coming up with new ideas, shipping new products and features that address users’ real needs.
  • You are a creative problem solver that’s excited by a challenge. You enjoy sitting in a room and whiteboarding ideas to confidently come up with simple, elegant solutions that everyone can move forward with.
  • You’re not afraid to try and fail – as long as it’s an opportunity to learn something and find a better solution. You’re open with others and share your learnings.
  • You’re always on a mission to make complex things simple. You’ll strive to inject more magic into Canva, while making sure Canva remains a beautiful, simple tool that anyone can use.
  • You’ll have a portfolio that demonstrates experience in product thinking where you have previously shipped UX/UI design for digital products.
  • You appreciate big picture thinking. While what we ship in the near future matters, making sure we’re designing strategically for the future of Canva is equally as important.
  • You have strong foundational graphic design skills, with an appreciation for typography, hierarchy, colour and balance.
  • You are resourceful and enjoy a little flexibility in your work. Our growth means there are new things to work on every day, as such it’s likely that you’ll often be working on new and exciting projects.
