Thank you for being 1 in 100 million

To the Canva community,

Today is a very special day for all of us as we celebrate the exciting milestone of more than 100 million people now using Canva each month. Our global design community now spans more than 190 different countries, with more than 200 designs being created every single second – from engaging videos to interactive pitch decks, inspiring classroom presentations, captivating personal websites, collaborative whiteboards – and soon – visual documents and a whole lot more.

Celebrating this milestone once seemed like a wild dream. Nearly a decade ago, we launched Canva with the dream of putting great design and visual communication into the hands of anyone, anywhere, on any device. We believed that no matter your profession, your income, your location or your experience – everyone, everywhere, should be empowered to design. It seemed deeply unfair to us that such a powerful force for unlocking creativity was limited to a small number of people with expensive software or extensive training, and so, we set out to change things one person at a time.

It took nearly three years for us to reach the milestone of one million people using Canva, and another two years after that for us to hit ten million. Today, reaching the milestone of more than one hundred million people using Canva every month still feels incredibly surreal.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have had the support and contributions of millions of people who have shaped Canva’s journey – from our earliest investors who believed in our ability to turn this wild dream into reality and those who are joining us today for our next phase of growth, to our amazing global community who continue to share Canva with their friends, families, schools and workplaces – and of course – our incredibly talented team of more than 3,200 people who create magic for our community every single day. Celebrating today’s milestone certainly wouldn’t be possible without the hard work, support, enthusiasm and love from millions of people like you from right around the world.

Empowering the whole world to design has been our mission for the last decade and remains just as critical as it was when we first launched Canva back in 2013. While our core product has evolved quite a lot during that time, the driving force behind it remains the same.

We believe visual communication is becoming an increasingly critical skill for everyone. It’s now critical for every individual, every company, every nonprofit, every team and now every school. That’s why we truly believe in the importance of making design accessible to absolutely everyone around the world.

From businesses of all sizes, to professional designers, teachers and students, and nonprofit organisations, the Canva stories from Canva’s community inspire us every single day and are the fuel behind our team, such as:

  • USA Today journalists, who are spread out across the US, in newsrooms, in the field, and working from home. Together, their hybrid team has been able to break news and deliver important stories in highly visual formats across social media platforms.
  • Lauren Grech, a new mom from Melbourne, who was down to $11 in her bank account. Taking matters into her own hands, Lauren used the Canva app to write and design a children’s book which she launched on social media. The response went viral, resulting in over $8,000 in sales in 24 hours, leading her to start a new career as a small business owner.
  • Tererai Trent, the founder of the Tererai Trent Foundation, a non-profit organisation that’s improved the lives of more than 38,000 children in Zimbabwe through education. In 2020, Tererai and her team used Canva to create a social media campaign that raised over US $100,000 in eight weeks to send 11 students to university.

We're only 1% of the way there

We often say internally at Canva that we’re only 1% of the way there – and it’s certainly never been truer than it is today, as we dream even bigger. It’s been amazing to see the rapid uptake of our newly announced Visual Worksuite products over the last few weeks, with millions of people bringing their ideas and creativity to life through our new Whiteboards, Presentations, Videos, Websites and more – but it's only just the beginning.

As more and more teams and workplaces adopt our all-in-one visual worksuite, we’re especially excited to see Canva becoming a much-loved tool for thousands of professional brand designers who are able to spend more of their time working on complex creative projects, and less time on repetitive tasks and small tweaks. This is an area we’re looking forward to doubling down on over the coming months, and we can’t wait to share some of the magic in the works.

As well as teams and businesses, our Canva for Nonprofits and Canva for Education programs are a huge part of the Canva community and both also recently reached some very exciting milestones, with more than 250,000 nonprofit organisations now using Canva for Teams to champion global causes as part of our free program for nonprofits.

In an increasingly visual world, we also know it’s more important than ever for every student across the globe to learn how to communicate visually. Following the launch of Canva for Education in 2020, we’re proud to have recently surpassed the milestone of more than 25 million teachers and students worldwide using Canva in the classroom. Investing in creativity for students is something we’re incredibly passionate about and is another area we’re really excited about over the months and years to come.
