Celebrating $1 billion of product donated to social impact
Our Two-Step Plan has reached an exciting milestone, hitting $1 billion worth of product donated through our free Canva for Education and Canva for Nonprofits programs.
Since the very beginning of Canva, we’ve had a Two-Step Plan(opens in a new tab or window): (1) To build one of the world’s most valuable companies and (2) to do the most good we can. Although we have a lifelong journey ahead of us, we’re proud to be starting to make strides forward – we've committed approximately 30% of Canva(opens in a new tab or window) to social impact and taken the 1% Pledge as a company committing 1% of our equity, 1% of our profits, 1% of our team’s time and 1% of product.
This week marks an exciting milestone: we’re celebrating $1 billion worth of annual product value donated through our education(opens in a new tab or window) and nonprofit(opens in a new tab or window) programs. More than 70 million students and teachers, and 670,000 nonprofits now use Canva’s tools to design, collaborate, and learn, advancing their ability to increase engagement and shape powerful impact.
Empowering creativity in classrooms around the world
We believe education is a fundamental human right, and it’s important that all students get access to high quality digital and design products in the classroom.
We launched Canva for Education in 2019 to provide accessible technology for all students and teachers, regardless of school finances as we want to empower every educator and inspire every learner.
Today’s students are stepping into an increasingly digital and visual world, where visual communication is a requirement in every industry and role, and it’s more important than ever that we’re instilling them with critical knowledge and skills.
We’re blown away to share that more than 70 million students and teachers now use Canva in the classroom, spread across 700,000+ schools and 8,500+ districts in 191 countries. Together, they’ve created more than 1.5 billion designs in the past 12 months.
It’s inspiring to hear of the incredible impact that a growing number of passionate educators have had on student success with Canva.
Kansas' biggest school district, Wichita Public Schools(opens in a new tab or window), has used Canva to level up creativity in the classroom and make information accessible for its diverse community. With more than 100 languages spoken in the community, Wichita has been able to shift from text-heavy communications to more visual mediums, helping to break down cultural and language barriers. They’ve even used Canva to easily translate newsletters or parent-teacher conference materials to ensure everyone’s included.
For Leander Independent School District (ISD)(opens in a new tab or window), Canva has been a key ingredient to help their 42,000 students across its 48 schools to find creative and innovative ways to showcase what they’re learning. Dual-language middle school students have used Canva to create videos in both Spanish and English to showcase how they'd solve global problems, while others have gotten creative with infographics to visually present data or create logos from scratch in business class.
We’ve integrated AI tools safely into Canva to help teachers save time while creating visual lessons their students love. Huntington Beach Union District(opens in a new tab or window) staff are now saving around 200 hours each month by replacing in-person meetings with online collaboration in Canva, giving them valuable time back to focus on students’ needs.
Empowering nonprofits to design change
Last year we were extraordinarily proud to reach the milestone of empowering 500,000 nonprofits(opens in a new tab or window) to design. We’ve now grown this number to more than 670,000 organizations who have created more than 230 million designs in Canva helping to champion important causes, communicate with stakeholders, raise awareness and donations.
Recently, we’ve been inspired by the profound impact that Australian nonprofit We Are Mobilise(opens in a new tab or window) has had in supporting the needs of the unhoused. Instead of materials that sit on dusty shelves or in dense reports, using Canva has ensured they can convey important, complex messages into meaningful, accessible, and helpful content.
Their groundbreaking programs have been designed in Canva, where they’ve found creative ways to communicate their message to many different audiences, from charity partners and program evaluators to their growing youth audience in social media.
Across the world, GivingTuesday(opens in a new tab or window) has grown from an annual giving day to a year-round generosity movement, celebrated in more than 80 countries (plus a space station!). They’ve used Canva for Nonprofits to provide a central design tool that helps the team share engaging visual content and expand their reach, raising an astounding $2.78 billion in just 24 hours and generating more than 20 billion social media impressions.
We’ve been continuously inspired by the powerful ways our nonprofit community is using Canva to make an impact around the world – including getting people to emergency protection and access to critical safety.
Task Force Nyx(opens in a new tab or window), a women-led, all-volunteer NGO fighting for the futures and freedoms of women and girls in Afghanistan, has used Canva in a variety of inventive ways to amplify the voices and stories of Afghan women seeking asylum. From fundraising reports and presentations to customized case management reports highlighting personal stories, we’re honored to have been able to play a role in supporting such an extraordinary organization.
Sharing free access to Affinity
Our recent acquisition of Affinity(opens in a new tab or window) also included pledging to make Affinity free(opens in a new tab or window) for teachers, schools, and nonprofits, with access to Affinity’s Designer, Photo, and Publisher. These tools for professionals will add momentous value to registered nonprofits and charities, teachers, and schools – and we can’t wait to hear how they’re able to level up their impact and education even further with Affinity.
Thank you
Thanks to everyone who has helped to make this milestone possible – from our community around the world, to the nonprofits and teachers who have helped to bring Canva into your organizations. Thank you for everything you do – it’s an honor to support you to achieve your important goals.
Sending you all lots of love and support!
Melanie
