Reflecting on 2023: Canva’s 10th and biggest year yet
As our 10th year of Canva comes to a close, we’ve stopped to look back at our momentous growth and the magic moments that have defined the year. Here’s our 2023 recap.
2023 was a momentous year for Canva. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary and look towards the next decade, we’re incredibly excited to share some of the massive milestones we’ve achieved together in what has undoubtedly been our biggest year yet.
Our global community is expanding at record-breaking rates; we unveiled our most game-changing products ever – including Magic Studio, a suite of AI-powered tools now used more than four billion times; and we continue to see rapid workplace growth and adoption with Canva now being used by more than 90% of the Fortune 500 companies.
The Canva team is also growing rapidly, with more than 4,000 of us worldwide, and we now empower more than 500,000 nonprofits across the globe as part of our efforts to do the most good we can.
Celebrating our 10th anniversary(opens in a new tab or window) moment was particularly special as we reflected on all the incredible milestones that defined the past decade. It's been an extraordinary journey, but as we often say – we’re only 1% of the way there, and the best is yet to come. So, 2023 — here's to you, and our standout moments.
1. Our community skyrocketed to more than 170 million people across the globe
Our community continues to grow rapidly – from Australia to Zimbabwe, there are now more than 170 million people in 190 different countries using Canva to achieve their visual communication goals.
To put that growth into perspective, we hit our first 60 million users in September 2021, and over the past 12 months, we added another 60 million. That means we've had eight years' worth of growth just this year alone.
2. We surpassed 20 billion designs created in Canva
Our community was busier than ever this year – we celebrated a milestone of 15 billion designs(opens in a new tab or window) created in Canva in February, and we’re closing out the year with over 20 billion. From websites to documents, presentations, and videos – that’s more than 6 billion new designs created in 2023 alone: the equivalent of 280 every second, 16,000 every minute, or one million each hour!
3. AI ushered in our biggest product launch yet with Magic Studio
This year we launched more new products than ever, with two brand-new product suites and a host of tools to help you achieve your design goals.
We unleashed the power of AI with our groundbreaking Magic Studio(opens in a new tab or window) products, backed by robust safety and privacy(opens in a new tab or window) measures. From Resize & Magic Switch(opens in a new tab or window) which resizes, transforms, and translates your designs, to mind-blowing photo editing(opens in a new tab or window) capabilities, text(opens in a new tab or window), image and video-generating tools(opens in a new tab or window), instant animation(opens in a new tab or window), and much more, we’ve brought all the power of AI into one place. Our AI products have already been used more than 4 billion times – and we took out second place from Apple for their AI app of the year.
We also supercharged design for workplaces(opens in a new tab or window) with new brand tools, enhanced our data visualization capabilities with interactive Flourish charts(opens in a new tab or window), and unveiled our new platform for developers(opens in a new tab or window). Following its launch in June, thousands of developers have joined the Canva Developers Program and have published 85 new apps using the Canva Apps SDK, which have collectively been used 22 million times.
4. We increased our traction in businesses with more than 90% of the Fortune 500 using Canva
This year, our first Visual Economy report highlighted(opens in a new tab or window) how visual communication has become a necessity in boosting productivity, unlocking creativity, enhancing collaboration, and scaling brands that stand out from the crowd.
Teams and workplaces around the world continue to turn to Canva to scale their visual communication. This year, we celebrated the milestone of more than 90% of the Fortune 500 companies now using Canva, and 135,000 teams in companies of more than 1,000 employees designing with Canva. This is a figure that has nearly doubled this year.
Brands across the globe including Starbucks, FedEx, Salesforce, Colgate-Palmolive, and Reddit are supercharging their work with Canva.
As design becomes table stakes in the workplace, more than 1.2 million people now list Canva as a core skill on their LinkedIn profile – nearly doubling in the past 12 months.
5. More than 1.5 million people tuned into our biggest Canva Create yet
Our second Canva Create(opens in a new tab or window) in March revealed some of the exciting ways we’re empowering brands in this new era, with more than 1.5 million people tuning in(opens in a new tab or window) across the world. We unveiled magic new additions(opens in a new tab or window) to Canva’s Visual Suite(opens in a new tab or window), launched a range of products for brands to make their home on Canva, and delivered some very special bonus ‘gifts’ based on requests from our community. 6. We’re now empowering more than 60 million students and teachers
We’re incredibly proud to now be supporting more than 60 million students and teachers as they unlock their creativity and achieve their goals. Preparing today’s students for an increasingly visual workforce is more important than ever, and through Canva for Education(opens in a new tab or window), we’ve loved being on the journey with millions of students worldwide as they develop these critical visual communication skills.
In our biggest education update yet, this year saw us bolster our suite of education products with a number of launches. This includes Canva for Campus(opens in a new tab or window), Canva for Districts(opens in a new tab or window), and our new suite of educator products(opens in a new tab or window) bringing customized lessons, student-safe AI products, and thousands of free resources to classrooms across the globe.
7. We brought Canva to one of the biggest university systems in the US
We announced an exciting step forward in our goal to supercharge visual communication for colleges and universities, by partnering with the University of California (UC)(opens in a new tab or window), the world’s leading public research university system. Through our partnership, we’ll bring the power of Canva for Campus to more than 500,000 students and faculty across the university’s network.
8. We took important steps towards our Two-Step Plan
Our Two-Step Plan at Canva is 1) to build the world’s most valuable company, and 2) to do the most good we can. This year saw us make exciting and meaningful progress towards Step Two through our continued partnership with GiveDirectly(opens in a new tab or window) with the launch of a $20M cash-transfer program to help fight poverty.
We also accelerated carbon removal with Watershed(opens in a new tab or window), reached the milestone of planting over 4 million trees through our One Print, One Tree program(opens in a new tab or window), donated 65,000+ meals to local communities, and held our first ever ‘Force for Good Week(opens in a new tab or window)’.
Our nonprofit community also reached a very special milestone(opens in a new tab or window), with 500,000 incredible organizations using Canva for Nonprofits(opens in a new tab or window) to champion important causes. And while we’ve celebrated 10 rewarding years of impact(opens in a new tab or window), we’re just getting started.
9. We’ve grown to more than 4,000 Canvanauts around the world
This year, we welcomed 1,128 newbies to the team, bringing our global team of Canvanauts to more than 4,000 incredible people around the world.
We broke last year’s record for job applications, with more than 358,000 people applying to join us on our mission to empower the world to design. That’s more than 1,000 people applying for a role at Canva every day.
We’re also particularly proud of the culture of ‘high performance with heart’ we’ve grown at Canva, which has gone from strength to strength in 2023. We’re consistently hearing great news from our team in surveys, including that 95% of our team is proud to work at Canva (and though the external benchmarks are around 86%, we're on a mission to hit 100%!) while 90% would recommend Canva as a great place to work (7% higher than the global average).
This year we also opened a number of new offices, including in Melbourne(opens in a new tab or window), Austin(opens in a new tab or window), and our first European campus in London(opens in a new tab or window). This brings us to eight Canva campuses globally, plus many more working hubs in places like Perth, Brisbane, and San Jose. Alongside these locations, our teams continue to shine from San Francisco, Beijing, Sydney, Prague, Manila, and more.
10. We’ve received many accolades, including the world’s best workplace for innovators
We’re incredibly proud to be recognized for another record-breaking year. We’re fortunate enough to have earned a place on Fast Company's World’s Most Innovative Companies list for 2023(opens in a new tab or window) as well as their Design Company of the Year(opens in a new tab or window), recognized as one of CNBC’s 2023 Disruptor 50 Companies(opens in a new tab or window), and named as one of TIME100 World’s Most Influential Companies.(opens in a new tab or window)
We also ranked first in Fast Company’s Best Workplaces for Innovators(opens in a new tab or window), were named on the Forbes Cloud 100 list(opens in a new tab or window), and won IHAC’s in-house agency of the year(opens in a new tab or window).
