Canva’s strategic partnerships 2022: a year in review

In 2022, we partnered with amazing brands from around the globe to solve unique challenges and unleash the power of visual communication.

Effective visual communication is essential to how businesses and organizations tell stories, create connections, and capture the attention of audiences. In 2022, we partnered with a range of leading organizations across many industries to help solve some of their biggest strategic challenges and take their visual communication game to the next competitive level.

From supporting and celebrating creative excellence to empowering journalists and sports teams with our Visual Worksuite(opens in a new tab or window), 2022 has been another standout year for our ecosystem of partners and their communities.

Supporting creative industries

Supporting creatives along their professional journey has always been important to us at Canva – which is why we joined forces with Creatively(opens in a new tab or window), an online creative and recruitment platform for over 400,000 creative professionals. Creatively and Canva co-hosted a series of bespoke workshops to empower this incredibly engaged community of designers, students and creatives to build and grow their businesses with Canva.

In 2022, we were proud to partner with the Webbys 26th Annual Awards show, which honors and celebrates creative excellence on the Internet. With the Webby’s team, we created the People's Voice Toolkit(opens in a new tab or window), a customizable promotional toolkit jam-packed with social and email assets, digital ads, and more. For the first time, nominees could easily share news of their nomination, inspire their networks to vote, and celebrate their wins!

The Toolkit brought a new creative layer to one thousand People’s Voice nominees and a new level of scale to the Webby Awards brand. In the short span of two weeks, the Toolkit was used to create over 11,000 individual assets, including Instagram tiles, Facebook posts, and email headers.

Supporting designers at the start of their professional journey is just as important to us as celebrating those who are well-established, which is why we supported the Design and Art Direction (D&AD) New Blood Awards – the premier award for emerging design talent. To help entrants craft their submissions, we equipped them with a set of curated templates and hosted a series of webinars with past judges and winners to share design best practices. Over a third of entrants used Canva to brainstorm, refine and submit entries, with many going on to win the prestigious D&AD New Blood Pencil – one of the most coveted creative trophies.

Supporting journalists and newsrooms

Canva is committed to supporting journalists to meet the challenges of change – from large newsrooms like USA Today to new news entrepreneurs. In 2022, the challenges became existential for Russia’s Echo of Moscow (“Ekho Moskvy”) a commercial radio station with a proud tradition of independent journalism. Forced to halt operations over their coverage of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, many of the team fled to Berlin and across western Europe – re-launching as a digital service simply called “Echo,” under the leadership of Echo of Moscow’s former deputy editor in chief, Maxim Kurnikov.

Canva has partnered with the Thomson Reuters Foundation(opens in a new tab or window), the corporate foundation of Thomson Reuters, the global news and information services company, to support the Echo team and many other exiled Russian independent media with the visual journalism tools they need to publish across all their channels. With the Echo team scattered across Europe, real-time collaboration is essential and they use Canva to create stories together, as time is always of the essence when covering breaking stories.

Canva’s support for the people of Ukraine and freedom of expression also saw us commission Ukrainian Canva Creator(opens in a new tab or window), Ilona Repkina, to design two artworks we could showcase during our participation at ONA22(opens in a new tab or window) - the Online News Association (ONA) conference in Los Angeles. Drawing on some of Ukraine’s most evocative national visual elements, such as the sunflowers and the Nightingale, we were proud to add to our ongoing support for the people of Ukraine, the quest for peace, and the need for strong and independent journalism everywhere.

Whether providing Echo with essential visual journalism tools, or our hands-on workshops with more than a thousand journalists at the ONA conference, Canva is proud to support the essential work of great journalism.

Powering creativity in the hands of fans

Fans don’t come any more committed than die-hard fans of The Walking Dead, so its eleventh and final season meant the producers, AMC, wanted to see the show out in a way fans would never forget. Together, we launched the ‘Designing Dead’(opens in a new tab or window) Canva Collection. Fans were invited to create their own Walking Dead-inspired masterpieces using Canva and a to let their Designing Dead creativity thrive in all its gory glory. From fan-art posters to social media posts, #DesigningDead was for the fans, by the fans, and culminated in the final artworks being voted on by more than 20,000 Walking Dead devotees!

We loved this tweet from one of the fan art winners:

Nothing brings people together at scale like sport. We’re proud to partner with the Philadelphia Eagles to drive fan engagement through activations such as the gameday flag holder t-shirt design competition. Eagles fans created custom t-shirts using Canva’s Eagles-themed templates that were then worn on the field by flag holders during key games throughout the 2022-2023 season.

We also brought the Eagles’ offensive tackle Jordan Mailata’s vision to life(opens in a new tab or window) in our Cleats in Canva activation, where he used Canva to design his cleats for a cause close to his heart – research in the fight against cancer. Go Birds!

Another strategic, creative year ahead

2022 has been a breakout year for Canva’s strategic partnerships program. Success is driven by creating meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships, empowering our partners with our product, and collaborating with creativity. We believe almost all problems can be solved with creativity, and we’re so happy to support our partners in meeting their challenges together.

We look forward to scaling new heights together in 2023!
