Celebrating Canva’s growth in the US

2023 was a record year for Canva in the US – and we can’t wait to continue to make our mark this year. Here are some of our favorite milestones from the past 12 months.

2023 was significant for Canva(opens in a new tab or window) – and as 2024 begins, we’re leveling up again on all fronts, particularly in the US.

Last year, we celebrated our 10th anniversary(opens in a new tab or window), supercharged our products with game-changing AI tools(opens in a new tab or window), bolstered our Visual Worksuite(opens in a new tab or window) as we doubled down on our commitment to building amazing products to empower businesses(opens in a new tab or window), empowered more than half a million changemakers(opens in a new tab or window) with Canva for Nonprofits(opens in a new tab or window), and grew Canva for Education(opens in a new tab or window) to power the classrooms of more than 60 million teachers and students around the world – and we also had a record year of growth across the United States.

Here are some of our favorite milestones and moments from the past 12 months that we’re excited to build on in 2024.

A record year of growth

Our global community continues to grow rapidly, with more than 170 million people worldwide now using Canva to design, collaborate, and dream up new ideas – and the United States has now become one of our largest markets.

And they’ve been busier than ever. We celebrated a milestone of 15 billion designs(opens in a new tab or window) last February, and we closed out 2023 with over 20 billion designs created in Canva – with 3.8 billion of these designs created in the States.

We were thrilled to see many leading US-based brands such as Reddit(opens in a new tab or window) and Zoom(opens in a new tab or window) adopting Canva, too – and as more and more global businesses(opens in a new tab or window) have shifted their focus to supercharging visual communication(opens in a new tab or window), more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies are now using Canva.

Growing our US-based teams

It’s been a few years since Canva set roots in the US(opens in a new tab or window), but 2023 transformed our presence to another level. Last year, we grew our US-based team to more than 200 people across a range of specialties, who all play an important role in shaping our future as our footprint continues to grow in the region.

From opening our new flagship campus(opens in a new tab or window) in Austin, Texas, to our growing hub in San Francisco, we’ve consciously evolved our hybrid work culture(opens in a new tab or window) to ensure we continue to empower our team to achieve their goals in ways that enable them to do their best work.

At Canva, we have three categories(opens in a new tab or window) of working based on what best suits each person and their team: hybrid, permanent remote, and onsite. Each of these categories offers a different Canva experience, but we truly believe our culture isn’t bound by locations – it’s rooted in our values(opens in a new tab or window).

Empowering our developer community

As we continue to grow, our community’s important role in the future of Canva isn't lost on us – and that includes shaping our product, too. A key next step in our vision to empower the world to design is making it seamless for developers to build on Canva, which is why we were proud to unveil the Canva Developers Platform(opens in a new tab or window) in San Francisco last June.

As a result, the Canva Apps Marketplace(opens in a new tab or window) is now a treasure trove full of revolutionary apps(opens in a new tab or window) – with many of our new developer-made apps made by folks based in the US – and with our recently announced $50 million Canva Developers Innovation Fund(opens in a new tab or window), we can’t wait to see our library of apps continue to grow.

Growing the world’s most diverse content library

Growing our content has been a focus over the past year as part of our aspiration to build the world’s most diverse content library(opens in a new tab or window). As part of this activity, we were incredibly proud to partner with some of the United States’ leading music houses, including Warner Music and Merlin, to bring more than 500,000 popular music tracks(opens in a new tab or window) to Canva.

We also collaborated with some incredible organizations across the country, including Noun Project(opens in a new tab or window), to provide better representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in Canva. As a result of their 2023 community Iconathon, more than 70 sketches of new icons were added to Canva’s content library to fill content gaps and replace outdated stereotypes.

Celebrating impactful partnerships

As a visual-led company, we’re passionate about partnering with creative organizations that drive culture to help empower the professionals at the forefront of creativity and storytelling.

From our Tribeca x Canva Creative Program to workshops and panels at PROOF, a Los Angeles-based short film festival, and our mentorship and incubator program with media production company Hoorae, 2023 was a big year for Canva and the US entertainment industry(opens in a new tab or window). In fact, we saw almost a 20% increase in the past 12 months in entertainment organizations actively using Canva, and the number of designs they’re publishing grow by more than 80%.

We’re excited to continue to supercharge our impact with key partners in 2024. Our commitment to empowering all entertainment and media professionals using our Visual Suite will come to life with our recently announced SeriesFest Vanguard Program(opens in a new tab or window), which will see a series of workshops and tutorials full of valuable insights shared throughout the 5-day event.

We’re also excited to continue our commercial music partnership with companies, including Warner Music and Merlin, and many more, to bring thousands of more popular music tracks to our Canva library.

We also invest in the future of journalism by partnering with organizations that support the future of the industry and media freedoms, empowering journalists(opens in a new tab or window) to create content with speed, ease, and brand consistency. On average, the US news community uses Canva’s newsroom templates(opens in a new tab or window) 70,000 times each month.

Growing our connections

We love connecting with our community and having in-person conversations by being present at events across the country. From Afrotech(opens in a new tab or window) and ATX TV Festival in Austin(opens in a new tab or window) to POSSIBLE in Miami and New York AdWeek(opens in a new tab or window), we were inspired by our community and the conversations we had in 2023, and we look forward to showing up at leading industry events again this year.

The rise of Canva for Education

We firmly believe in making visual communication accessible to everyone – and growing increasingly essential skills such as design literacy begins in the classroom. That’s why we’re proud to empower millions of teachers and students in the United States with free access to Canva for Education(opens in a new tab or window) – our biggest cohort in the world.

In 2023 we launched Canva for Campus(opens in a new tab or window), our college and tertiary education offering, to bring the power of visual communication to colleges and universities around the world. We’ve recently taken this a step further by partnering with the University of California (UC)(opens in a new tab or window) to bring the power of Canva to more than 500,000 students across the university’s network.

We love working alongside our education community in the US to hear from teachers directly about how we can equip them with the tools and resources they need to grow creativity in their classrooms – whether that’s at large-scale events such as ISTE(opens in a new tab or window), hosted education events at our campuses, or providing an opportunity for teachers to share their ideas and experiences(opens in a new tab or window) using Canva.

Giving back to the community

Everything we do at Canva is underpinned by our Two-Step Plan(opens in a new tab or window) – 1) to become one of the world’s most valuable companies, and 2) to do the most good we can. This mission shapes a huge part of our culture, and our team actively drives positive change(opens in a new tab or window) for their broader communities.

Each year, every Canvanaut has three days of paid ‘Force for Good’ leave to use to give back to the world in a way that feels most impactful to them, but we also dedicate one Friday every month to Step Two with our ‘Force for Good Fridays’ initiatives, where we encourage our team to take time out of their busy schedules to bond with their teammates and give back to those who need it most.

We’re proud to share that in 2023 our US-based Canvanauts collectively spent more than 1,400 hours supporting nonprofit organizations to lift spirits and build deep connections with our local communities. From volunteering at food banks and shared kitchens to connecting with isolated or vulnerable members of the community, we look forward to having an even bigger impact across the country this year.

Supporting environmental recuperation is very important to us at Canva, which is why we launched Canva’s One Print One Tree program(opens in a new tab or window) in 2021. For every print order placed with Canva, we plant a tree – it’s a simple idea with a big impact across the globe. Our US community has played a huge role in the success of the program, and in 2023 we were proud to plant more than 2.8 million trees as a result of their Canva Print(opens in a new tab or window) orders.

Honorable mentions

We were humbled to receive incredible accolades from US-based organizations, titles, and institutions last year. From earning a place on Fast Company's World’s Most Innovative Companies list for 2023(opens in a new tab or window) as well as their Design Company of the Year(opens in a new tab or window) and being ranked first for Best Workplaces for Innovators(opens in a new tab or window), to being recognized as one of CNBC’s 2023 Disruptor 50 Companies(opens in a new tab or window), making the Forbes Cloud 100 list(opens in a new tab or window) and being named as one of TIME100 World’s Most Influential Companies(opens in a new tab or window), we’re incredibly proud of the work our extraordinary team does to make Canva recognized as a world-leading global company.

The future is just beginning

2023 was undoubtedly a defining year for Canva in the US, but we’re still only 1% of the way there. From growing our US team and evolving our culture to continuing to grow the world’s leading all-in-one visual platform and making even more impact with our Two-Step plan, we can’t wait to make our mark in 2024.
