Canva named #1 Best Workplace for Innovators by Fast Company

Innovation and creativity is at the heart of Canva, and it’s a huge part of how we empower our team to do the best work of their lives. Following a momentous year for Canva, we’re thrilled to have been named number one on Fast Company’s 2023 Best Workplaces for Innovators list.


In an increasingly digital era where things change quickly, creating a culture that fuels innovation has become critical for success. Innovation and creativity is at the heart of Canva’s DNA – it’s something we’ve always championed when empowering our team to do the best work of their lives, which is why we’re incredibly proud to have been named number one on Fast Company’s 2023 Best Workplaces for Innovators List(opens in a new tab or window).

The list shines a light on 100 companies around the world cultivating innovation across their organizations – something we’ve always strived to foster in our culture at Canva. Our values underpin everything we do, and two of these in particular – ‘pursue excellence’ and ‘make complex things simple’ – are foundations for driving innovation across all areas of the work we do.

Our incredible team

Our team of more than 3,500 Canvanauts is united in their passion for creativity, collaboration, and contributing to Canva’s unique culture and technology. We know the best ideas can come from anywhere, which is why we empower our team with creative freedom to launch inventive new projects and to shape ideas.

We’re continuously looking at ways to improve our community's experience, and we champion this through our bi-annual Fix Fests(opens in a new tab or window) and our two-day, remote-first Hackathons(opens in a new tab or window) where our entire team, from all parts of Canva, focuses on inventing new big-picture ideas, pushing the boundaries, and exploring how design and technology can create positive impact. Some of our community’s most loved features and automations are ideas born from the sparks of creativity of previous Hackathons, so they’re events we take seriously.

We know that innovation requires new ways of thinking, so we encourage everyone across our team to pursue any goal, regardless of how many years of experience they might have. Our popular ‘mic drop’ Magic Shortcut – which is used more than 10,000 times each day – was an idea from an intern, who is now a full-time member of our engineering team.

Investing in our team's growth and development to foster these big ideas has always been one of our top priorities, with initiatives ranging from learning classes at Canva University and an internal coaching program, to a Canva Pathways program centered around internal mobility and reskilling opportunities.

Our community of 135 million

Many of our products originate from ideas sparked by our community, and we encourage them to innovate alongside us. Our Canva Creators(opens in a new tab or window) program empowers creatives everywhere to design and publish templates to Canva’s library of millions of design assets, and our recently launched Canva Developers Platform(opens in a new tab or window) opens up a new level of collaboration with our developer community to unlock even more innovation in the years to come.

A defining year for Canva

This recognition signifies the progress we’ve made in the past 12 months(opens in a new tab or window) where we’ve collectively evolved Canva into an innovative all-in-one visual communication platform – from the introduction of our Visual Suite(opens in a new tab or window) and our AI Magic tools(opens in a new tab or window), to the launch of our new world-leading data visualization integration, Flourish(opens in a new tab or window) and hitting 15 billion designs(opens in a new tab or window).

Looking to the future

We’ve always had a deeper mission at Canva called our Two-Step Plan(opens in a new tab or window) – Step One) to become one of the most valuable companies in the world, and Step Two(opens in a new tab or window)) to do the most good we can. Although we’ve made great progress, we truly are still only one percent of the way there. The more we continue to innovate, the more we'll grow, resulting in a greater positive impact we’ll be able to have around the world.
