Coffee catch-up with Smartmockups Program Manager Martina Beranová

We caught up with one of Canva’s Czech-based Smartmockups team members, Program Manager Martina Beranová.

Welcome back to our Coffee Catch-Up series, where we sit down with different members of our Canva team from around the globe, to find out more about what makes them tick, both at and outside of work.

This time, we’re chatting with Czech-based Smartmockups Program Manager, Martina Beranová.

Hi, Martina! How would you explain to your grandma what you do?

“Do you remember when I gave you a mug with a picture and the words ‘Best grandma in the world’ on it?” I help people visualize their ideas in the real world with the help of professional mockups.

Smartmockups in Canva lets you mock up your own designs onto an ever-growing library of options.

Tell us about what you get to work on at Canva.

I'm the program manager for the Smartmockups Content team, where we create many amazing digital mockup templates. Once the nearly 8,000 templates are integrated into Canva, users can simply and quickly create their own mockups. Just upload your design into a template, and create a personalized mockup – for example, your logo on a t-shirt worn by a model, or seeing your product packaging sitting in a real-life scenario.

Our Smartmockups team went through an incredible year of growth in 2022, and we now have about 40 people. Our main office is in Prague, but we have colleagues all over the Czech Republic and even in Slovakia. It's amazing to work with such a team and even better to meet in person, for example, at our Canva Season Openers.

So, why Canva?

I knew and used Canva before I started working for Smartmockups, which became part of Canva in 2021. I found Canva to be a great tool in helping me prepare things both for work and personally, like an invitation to my kids' birthday party. So the idea of working for Canva was very exciting for me, and to work here from the Czech Republic.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I would love to be able to teleport. An added bonus, it would make it easier for us to have easier meeting times with Australia!

What's been your proudest moment at Canva so far?

Organizing a professional product photoshoot in collaboration with the Canva Print team here in Prague. It was great to see the involvement from all sides and the comparison of how we work and how the team in Australia works. We had the opportunity to get to know each other more professionally and personally. The result was print product previews of new print products in Canva, which look incredible.

What has surprised you most about working for an Australian company from Europe?

It’s definitely a juggle trying to find relatively convenient meeting times. But everyone is very friendly, so getting along is no problem. However, it's funny that we wish each other good morning and good evening at the same meeting.

Tell us about your favorite Canva club.

My big passion is food. That's why I love our Foodies club. It's interesting how many of our team debates revolve around food.

What are you reading or watching at the moment?

My kids have convinced me that I need to watch the Wednesday series with them. Since Tim Burton is my favorite director, I’m okay with that. In the evenings, I flip through my new cookbook Simple by Ottolenghi.

How are you planning to use your Vibe and Thrive allowance?

Well-being is very important to me, so I'll use Vibe & Thrive for that. I love yoga, and one of my goals is to master the handstand. So I would like to sign up for some classes.

What's the best advice you've ever heard?

My favorite piece of advice is from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Don't panic.

What’s your favorite place you’ve ever traveled to? And where would you dream of heading to next?

I like mountains, nature and the sea, preferably with few people around. This is the main criterion for all our trips. One great trip was when we traveled through the Balkans to Greece in a campervan and stopped at places we liked. Next year, I’d like to go on a yoga retreat in Madeira.

What's your favorite Canva tool or feature?

I love creating presentations in Canva. I'm always finding new features, which is great fun for me. Some of my recent favorites include the new Magic commands, like adding a drumroll or confetti.

What’s an off-work topic you’ve been chatting with your team about recently?

A few topics we discussed at the last Season Opener were how to make the best dill sauce, how to knit a sweater, and there was a long discussion about Scotch and Japanese whiskey.
