Create ad variations for testing in Canva

Testing ad variations helps you learn what works with your audience and improve campaign performance. You can create quick, consistent versions, whether you're adjusting headlines, visuals, or CTAs.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  • A base design (your original ad).
  • Your brand assets uploaded.
  • A clear idea of what you want to test (e.g., messaging, imagery, layout).

1. Duplicate your original design

  1. Open your ad in the Canva editor.
  2. From the Pages panel, hover over your page.
  3. Select
    (more icon), then Duplicate page.
  4. Repeat for each variation.

2. Adjust one element per variation

Change only one thing per version to get clear results. You can test:

  • Headlines — Try different tone, length, or wording
  • Visuals — Swap out images, backgrounds, or illustrations
  • CTAs — Compare Learn more vs Get started
  • Layout — Rearrange elements without changing the message

3. Use Brand Controls to stay consistent

Apply your Brand Kit’s:

  • Colors
  • Fonts
  • Logos

This keeps every ad aligned with your brand.

4. Label each variation

  1. Select the page.
  2. Click the title at the top.
  3. Add a name like “A – Blue CTA” or “B – New image”.

Clear names help you stay organized during testing.

5. Download your variations

  1. Select
    Share.
  2. Select
    Download.
  3. Choose a file type (PNG, JPG, or MP4).
  4. Under Pages, select All pages or specific ones.
  5. Click Download.

6. Upload and test your ads

  • Upload each variation as a separate creative
  • Use the same labels you used in Canva
  • Track results using your ad platform’s analytics

Tips for effective ad testing

  • Change one element per test
  • Start small — 2 to 4 variations
  • Match platform size requirements
  • Review results and iterate in Canva
