Add Furigana to text
Adding furigana isn't available in Canva Docs. This feature is also only available to those based in Japan or who use Canva in Japanese.
Add furigana to text
Add furigana to your text to help understand your design easier. It can be added to horizontal or vertical text.
- Select the text you want to add furigana to.
- On the floating toolbar, select More. You can also access furigana by selecting Apps on the side panel.
- Select Furigana.
- If there are multiple text boxes in your design, in the side panel, select the text boxes you want to add furigana to.
- Select Apply.
Edit furigana
You can change the text size and font after generating furigana.
- Double-click the furigana text box that you want to edit.
- Delete or edit its contents. Use the text edit options on the editor toolbar to format your text.
- Select outside the text box to finish.

If your furigana is overlapping with your original text, select Spacing to increase the line spacing. The spacing should be bigger than 1.4 so that the text doesn’t overlap.
For Canva Education, furigana is generated in the default font UDデジタル教科書体NPL. You can change the font after furigana is generated.
Delete furigana text boxes
- Click to select the text box that you want to delete.
- On the floating toolbar that appears above or below it, click on Delete. You can also press Backspace (Windows) or Delete (Mac) on your keyboard.
