Understanding how Canva Creators earn with Canva AI

Canva AI is a new way to create with Canva. Start with something you love, like a Creator-made template, your past designs, or your Brand Kit, and Canva AI helps you build from there.

Start from the homepage or in the editor, with everything from design to writing to code. Every design is instantly editable, so you can change every detail without reprompting. Or keep chatting with Canva AI to refine and evolve your work as you go. You’re always in control. Add your personal style, make your own creative choices, and bring your team in to build on ideas together.

How Creators earn

When content is referenced in Canva AI and contributes to a published design, its Creator earns through Canva's existing Royalty Pool. Up to three templates or standalone elements can be referenced, and if multiple pieces of Creator content are referenced, each Creator earns. Selecting or generating from a template alone doesn't trigger payment. The resulting design needs to be published for templates to be paid, or exported for elements to be paid.

Frequently asked questions

Do element Creators earn royalties on the elements within template references?

Yes, Creators of elements inside templates referenced by Canva AI are also paid royalties when the design is published.

When do Creators actually get paid?

Creators are paid once a design that used their template as a reference is published and not simply when someone selects or previews it. If someone attaches a template, generates a design, and never publishes it, no payment is triggered. This matches how template payments already work on Canva today; Canva AI doesn't change that standard.

What actually counts as "publishing" a design for payment purposes?

  • When a design is considered published and triggers royalty payments for any referenced templates or elements
  • When a user does any of the following:
    • Downloads the design
    • Saves it as an image
    • Prints it
    • Shows it in full screen, or presents it on screen

Any one of these is enough, a user doesn't need to do more than one.

Is this the same as Canva's AI training programme?

No. This falls under Canva's standard Royalty Pool, which is the same system that already pays Creators when their templates are used. It's unrelated to the AI training compensation programme, where Creators can choose whether their content is used to train Canva's AI models.

If a template gets blended with others or heavily transformed, does the original Creator still get paid?

Yes. As long as a template was used as a reference and the resulting design was published, the Creator is paid. No matter how much the final result was changed, remixed, or combined with other references. It doesn't need to look like the original template.

Are Creator-made templates prioritised over Canva-made or AI-generated ones in results?

No, there's no boost for Creator templates specifically. Results use Canva's standard search ranking. Some Canva-made templates are also published under the Canva AI "Human Craft" brand for Canva AI, so both Creator and Canva-made templates can appear on equal footing.
