Testing your Canvas integration
This is a follow-up guide for Admins to check if they’ve successfully set up an integration between Canva and Canvas. For instructions on how to complete this set up, please refer to the Connect Canva to Canvas (for school administrators) or migration guide.
Account Setup
We suggest you set up a test course and add two user accounts: one as a teacher and one as a student.
As an admin:
- Go to Courses.
- Select “All courses”.
- Select + Course, then enter a course name.
If you haven’t enabled Canva Education for all courses:
- Go to Apps, then select View App configurations, and select + App.
- In the prompt, set the configuration type to By ClientID.
- Paste the ClientID generated for your developer key.
- Select Install, and refresh the course page.
- After installation, Canva Education should appear in the navigation menu.
- Selecting the Canva Education link should open Canva in a new tab.
- If it doesn’t open in a new tab, check that "windowTarget": "_blank" has been added correctly.
Test editor button placement for teachers
- Go to Pages for the test course.
- Select + Page.
- Enter a page title.
- Select the Apps icon.
- Select View All.
- Select Canva Education.
- In the pop-up, choose an existing design or select ➕ Create a design if none exist.
- After selecting, your design should appear in the editor.
Test assignment selection placement for teachers (external tools)
- Go to the Assignments for the test course.
- Select + Assignment
- Scroll to Submission Type then, select External Tool from the dropdown.
- Select Find
- Select Canva Education
- In the pop-up, choose an existing design — or select ➕ Create a design
- You can check Load this tool in a new tab
- Select Select
- The assignment title should update.
- A preview of your design should appear in the editor.
- Select Save and publish
- If you checked Load this tool in a new tab, a Load in a new window button will appear
- Selecting this button should open Canva in a new tab
Test using a student account For the following tests, use a separate account that’s enrolled as a student in your Canvas course. Don’t use the View as a student button — you’ll still be logged into your teacher or admin Canva account, so the test won’t reflect a true student experience.
Test assignment selection placement for students (external tools)
As a student:
- Go to the assignment created in the previous step
- Select Load in a new window
- Make any updates, then select Submit to Canvas
Test homework submission placement for students
This is a legacy placement. We recommend using the External tool submission type instead.
As a teacher:
- Create an assignment with the Online submission type.
- Choose Website URL as the submission option.
As a student:
- Go to the assignment.
- Select Start assignment.
- Select Canva Education.
- Choose an existing design, or select ➕ Create a design to submit.
Test SpeedGrader for teachers
After submitting both a homework and external tool assignment, check if the submissions appear from the teacher’s view.
- As a teacher, go to the assignments that you created.
- Select SpeedGrader.
- You should see the submissions from the student account.
- You can add comments or edits to each submission.
