Use Canva in Slack

Collaborate with your team directly from Slack with its new version.

Here's a list of what you can do:

  • Reply directly to comments on Canva designs, grant access or update design controls, and easily share designs from within the Slack app.
  • Get a quick preview of the designs before you click the design link.
  • Create Magic Designs with a single prompt.

This is available to all Canva users. In the case of teams, members need to individually add the Canva app on Slack and connect their accounts.

Connecting the Canva for Slack app

If you're still connected to the old version of the app

Upgrade to the new version in 2 easy steps.

If your workspace owner has enabled app approval, only workspace owners and app managers will be able to remove apps, so you might need an Admin’s assistance to upgrade.

Step 1: Remove the old version of the app

Remove version 1 of Canva for Slack app to avoid duplicate notifications or unexpected unfurling behaviours. For the detailed steps, check out this guide on removing an app from your Slack workspace.

Step 2: Install & connect to the new app

  1. If app approval is enabled, reach out to your admin to approve the new version of the app for your workspace. Otherwise, you can add the app to your individual workspace.
  2. Once added, follow the prompts to connect your account. Alternatively, type /canva connect from anywhere in Slack and follow the prompts to connect from there.

If you’re adding the app for the first time

  1. From your Slack workspace side menu, under the Apps section, click on
    Add apps.
  2. On the apps directory, search for Canva. Click on it from the results.
  3. Click Add to Slack. Depending on your workplace settings, you might need permission from your Slack administrator to install the app.
  4. On the Canva bot welcome message, click Connect your account, and log in to your Canva account.
  5. Allow the app access to finish.

Type /canva help in Slack at any time for a list of available commands. Type /canva disconnect to disconnect your Canva and Slack accounts, or /canva connect to link them again.

Receiving notifications on Slack

After linking your accounts, you’ll automatically be notified on Slack of the following:

  • When a design or folder is shared with you
  • When a design or folder is shared with a team that you’re part of
  • When you’re mentioned in a comment
  • When someone replies to your comment
  • When you’re assigned a task
  • When your assigned task is resolved
  • When there are new comments on designs you own
  • Canva Teams and Canva Education users:
    • When someone requests access to your design
    • When someone asks for design approval
    • When your design approval request is approved or rejected

You can open Canva directly from these notifications to view shared designs, respond to comments, approve designs or grant access requests - no need to check your email.

To manage your notification settings, type /canva settings. You can select which types of Canva notifications you’d like to receive in Slack.

Creating Magic Designs

  1. In Slack, type /canva magic design to launch Magic Design from Slack.
  2. In the Canva window that appears, describe what you’d like to see in the design. You may enter up to 140 characters.
  3. Click on Generate. From here, you’ll get a quick preview of 2 designs that you can click to view in Canva before sharing in your channel. If you’d like more design ideas, click on Regenerate.

This technology is new and improving. Please report any results if they don't seem right.

Sharing designs from Slack

To quickly share a design from Slack, simply type /canva share design. This will open a Canva window in Slack, where you can browse and select your recently accessed Canva designs to share in the channel without leaving your current workflow.

FAQ’s

  1. Check if you or your workspace admin have removed the old Canva app from your workspace, as this may interfere with the new version.
  2. If you are still not seeing the link unfurling, please reach out to the team at Slack who'll be able to look into this issue further. You can contact them here.
