Review and restore older versions of designs

Restore an older version of your design from the File menu in the editor. You can restore up to 1,000 previous versions, with no time limit on how long versions are kept.

To view version history, you must be the design owner or have edit access. Users with view or comment access can’t see version history.

If you’re looking for a missing design, learn how to find them. And if you’re having saving issues, learn what to do when changes to your design aren’t saving.

The full feature is available to Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits users. If you’re designing on a partner website through the Canva Button, this option will not be available.

Review and restore older versions of designs

Learn how to view, compare, and restore previous versions of a design using the Version History feature in Canva.

  1. Open the design that you want to review.
  2. Select File, then go to
    Version history.
  3. Select the saved versions to compare them.
  4. To restore the version you’re viewing, select
    Restore.
  5. To create a copy of your selected version, select
    Make a copy.

If you are working in a document set to “offline”, select the icon in the menu bar above the editor, and select Open version history.

You can also see avatars next to each saved version, indicating who edited it. This makes it easier to:

  • Track collaboration in real time.
  • Restore changes from a specific teammate.
  • Monitor student contributions (for educators).

I don't see old versions of my design

What can cause this

  • The version you're looking for might be older than what is stored. Paid users can access up to 1,000 previous versions of your design. Free users do not have access to Version History.
  • You might be on the wrong team or account.
  • You may not have edit access to the design. Only the design owner or users with edit access can see version history.
  • You might've designed it on one of Canva's partner websites and not via the [Canva website](https://www.canva.com/) or using the Canva app.

What to do

  • If you have multiple teams or Canva accounts, try switching teams or logging in to another account.
  • Go to the Canva website or use the Canva app to access full Canva features when designing, including restoring design versions.

Understand Version History vs. Trash

Canva offers two different features to help you recover your work:

  • Version History lets you view and restore previous versions of your design.
  • Trash lets you recover designs that were deleted entirely from your account. To restore deleted designs, go to: Recover deleted designs from Trash.

If your design still exists but you've lost some changes, use Version History. If your entire design is missing, check the Trash folder.
