Combine data points into a single value in Canva Charts
Simplify large data sets on your chart by using the Aggregate data tool in Canva.
What is data aggregation in Canva Charts?
Aggregating data combines multiple data points into a summarized value, making your chart cleaner and easier to interpret. Instead of displaying every individual data point, Canva automatically groups them by category, time period, or other logical groupings.
Not seeing the aggregation option?
This feature is currently launching in stages and may not be available in all accounts yet. Access is being introduced in phases, and your account may not have it at this time.
Stay tuned—it may become available in a future update!
Where can you use the Aggregate Data tool?
The Aggregate Data tool is currently available for the following chart types:
- Bar and Row charts
- Pie and Donut charts
For those charts, you can apply aggregation functions such as:
Method | What it does |
|---|---|
Sum | Adds up all values within a category. |
Average | Computes the mean value of data points in a category. |
Count | Determines the number of entries in a category. |
Min/Max | Identifies the smallest or largest value in a category. |
Median | Finds the middle value when data is ordered. |
For example in a bar chart, if you set the data to display the following:
- Labels – What to show: Animal type
- Bars - What values to show: Age
If you chose Average as the aggregation method, then, your chart will show the average age for each animal type.
Tip: Aggregation works best when your chart is based on raw, unsummarized data. If you're using the default chart data (already simplified), applying aggregation may not change the chart since the values are already summarized.
Aggregating data
Before you can use aggregation, you’ll need to add or connect your data source. Learn how to add, import, or connect your chart data.
Once your chart and data are set up, go to the Data tab in the chart editor to access the Aggregate data options—such as sum, average, or median.
- Select the chart to open the toolbar, then select Edit.
- In the Chart panel, go to Chart setup.
- Depending on the chart, set the Label field to define the category by which your data will be grouped.
- Under Bars or Segments – What values to show (based on chart type):
- Set the value field to the numerical column — this is the data you want to measure. Note: The aggregation happens on the Value field and is grouped by the Label field.
- For bar charts – Each label becomes a bar, representing a category you're comparing.
- For pie charts – Each label becomes a slice of the pie, showing a part of the whole.
- Set the value field to the numerical column — this is the data you want to measure. Note: The aggregation happens on the Value field and is grouped by the Label field.
- Go to Aggregate data and click on the dropdown.
- Choose from the aggregation options:
- Sum - Total of values
- Average - Mean of values
- Count - Number of frequency
- Note: Selecting Count doesn't consider Label as part of aggregation, it simply counts the number of unique values in the Label field (ignores actual values)
- Min - The smallest value
- Max - The largest value
- Median - The middle value
Do charts in Canva automatically aggregate data?
Charts will only be automatically aggregated when raw data is added through Magic Charts. Learn more about Magic Charts.
This currently applies to Bar and Pie charts only. We're working on adding aggregation to more chart types soon.
