Create and manage Components
You can create reusable design elements called Components and use them across your designs. Components help you maintain consistency by letting you update all instances at once when you make changes to the source.
Create a component
Turn any selection of elements into a reusable component within your design.
To create a brand component:
- Open your design.
- Select the elements you want to turn into a component.
- Lastly, right-select and choose Create component, or select it from the editor toolbar.
Your component is now available within that design.
Update all Component instances
Edit a brand component in your design
When you edit a source component, you can push changes to all instances in your design.
- Select the source component you want to edit.
- Edit the component.
- Select Change all (next to the component name) to update all instances in your design.
Publish components to Brand Kit
Share components with your team by publishing them to Brand Kit.
Note: Only owners, admins, and brand designers can publish components to Brand Kit.
Edit a brand component in your Brand Kit
- Create a component.
- Select the component.
- Select Publish to Brand Kit.
- You can also save it to the Brand Kit when creating it by selecting Save to Brand Kit (available to brand designers, admins, and owners).
The component is now available to your team in Brand Kit.
Sync component changes
You control when components sync. They don't update automatically, so you choose when to push updates to other instances.
Sync within a design
- Edit the source component.
- Select Change all to update all instances in the current design.
Sync Brand Kit components
- Edit the source component in Brand Kit.
- Select Publish to push changes to all instances.
- Team members can then sync updates to instances in their designs.
Component instances can be synced two ways:
- Sync single instance: Update one instance at a time.
- Sync all in design: Update all outdated instances in the current design at once.
Customise component instances
You can customise component instances without breaking the link to the source. Available customisations:
- Text content: Edit text within the instance.
- Text formatting: Change font styles, sizes, and colours.
- Image and video: Swap media elements.
Control what others can edit
As the component creator, you can control what changes others can make to instances:
- Toggle all controls off to create a fully locked component that users can't modify, but still syncs when you publish changes.
- Toggle text formatting content, or image and video off to create a partially editable instance that receives all style changes from the source.
For components in a design: You can restrict text content, text formatting, and media (image/video)
For components published to Brand Kit: All of the above, plus the ability to restrict detaching entirely with.
Detach a component instance
Select Detach to turn the instance into a regular design element that is no longer linked to the source. This action can't be undone.
When you sync an instance, your customisations stay intact. Only the parts you haven't changed will update to match the source.
Use components in Canva Docs and email
You can use components in Canva Docs and Email. They only work inside embedded designs. Add components using the /design command.
Limitations
- Manual sync only: To update instances, select Publish or Change all (in a design).
- No nested components: You can't place one component inside another component.
- No auto-layout: Components don't resize or rearrange automatically to fit different layouts.
- Canva Docs and Email: Components only work inside embedded designs.

Frequently asked questions
Keep customisations when syncing
Your customisations stay in place when you sync. Only the parts of the design that aren't customised update to match the source component.
Understand detached instances
Once you detach an instances it becomes a regular design element. To use the component again, delete the detached element and add a new copy from the source.
Use components after downgrading
You can still edit existing component instances. You can't create new components or publish changes.
