Additional support for External Tools in Canvas
Canva now supports the External Tools placement in Canvas. This setup makes it easy for students to submit Canva designs as assignments in SpeedGrader.
We’ve also made changes to the Editor Button, which now only supports view-only designs for students.
If you’ve already integrated Canva with Canvas, follow the steps below to update your developer key to enable access to these external tools.

Update your existing developer key
- Sign in to your Canvas account.
- Note that you need to have Admin access to set up LTI 1.3.
- Go to Admin.
3. Under the Admin section, select your school or district.
4. From the admin side panel, select Developer Keys.
5. Locate the Developer Key for Canva for Education, then select the pencil icon.
6. If there’s no description, set it to: “Students get their own copy, and submit back to SpeedGrader.”
7. Select LTI Advantage Services to expand the section, then select the following options:
8. Select Additional Settings to expand the section.
9. If there’s no icon URL, set it to: https://static.canva.com/static/images/canva_logo.png
10. Add the following Custom fields:
- canvas_domain=$Canvas.api.domain
- canvas_assignment_id=$Canvas.assignment.id
- canvas_user_id=$Canvas.user.id
11. Under Placements, add “Assignment Selection”
12. Select Assignment Selection to expand the section, then enter the following:
- Target Link URL: Copy the Target Link URL from the top of the page. This should match the OAuth Redirect URL in your Canva settings.
- Select Message Type: LtiDeepLinkingRequest
- Icon Url: https://static.canva.com/static/images/canva_logo.png
- Add text: Canva Education
13. Select Save
