Design and fold your mailer box

When designing custom boxes, it’s important to know where folds and cuts will occur. Fold lines help you place design elements in the right areas, so your printed box looks how you intended once assembled.

Design your mailer box

  1. Go to your box design in Canva to enter the editor.
  2. Find the visible dieline guides and overlays. These highlight the fold lines, flaps, panels, and bleed zones.
  3. Avoid placing key elements (like logos or text) over the fold or cut lines.
  4. Use the mockup preview to check how your design looks when folded. For the most accurate view, use the 3D preview. This is the best way to understand how your printed mailer box will look after printing and folding.

Fold lines are shown as dotted lines, while cut lines appear solid. These visual cues help you understand how your box will be assembled.

To assemble your mailer box, follow the steps below:

  1. Lay the mailer box on a flat, clean surface.
  2. Fold up the front and back flaps.
  3. Bring up the side walls of your box.
  4. Snap them into place.
  5. Close the lid.
  6. Lock it shut.

Troubleshoot common issues

If your design looks misaligned after folding:

  • Check if text or logos are placed too close to the fold or cut lines.
  • Adjust design elements to stay within the safe zones (also called “printable areas”).
  • Use the proofing alerts in Canva to detect issues with image quality or font size.
  • Make sure the folding process was followed in the correct order

FAQs

Not yet. The current version only supports outside designs. Inside printing will be introduced in future updates.

Are fold instructions printable?

No. Fold lines are for design guidance only and won’t appear on the printed product.

What if I ignore the fold guides?

Designs that cross over folds or cuts may appear distorted, misaligned, or unreadable once folded.
