Best practices when using Canva MCP
- Be specific: Add details like dimensions, colours, text, and design names to get better results.
- Use your brand: Refer to existing brand assets to keep your designs consistent.
- Iterate gradually: Start simple, then refine through follow-up chats.
- Stay organised: Use folders and clear naming to help your AI assistant find designs faster.
Manage Canva MCP tools and permissions
You can control which Canva tools your AI assistant can access—and how often it asks for permission.
In Claude:
- Open Claude (desktop or claude.ai).
- Go to your profile settings.
- Click Integrations in the left sidebar.
- Find the Canva MCP integration and select Tools and settings.
From here, you can:
- Disable specific tools: Use the toggles beside each action.
- Stop all MCP access: Toggle Disable all tools.
- Allow tools without repeated prompts: Enable permanent permissions so your assistant doesn’t ask every time.
Once enabled, tool access will persist across sessions unless you manually change it.
Tool visibility notes
- Some tools may only appear in Agent mode (Claude, Cursor, VS Code).
- If you don’t see Canva MCP in your tools list, check:
- You're in the right mode (Agent/Dev)
- Config is correct and authorised
- Your Canva account is connected
- In Claude, Canva's 9 design tools are grouped into two:
- read_design - replaces get-design, get-design-content, get-design-pages, get-presenter-notes, and start-editing-transaction. It also now reads geometry, element types, backgrounds, strokes, and opacity.
- edit_design - replaces perform-editing-operations, commit-editing-transaction, cancel-editing-transaction, and get-design-thumbnail. It also now supports text insertion and page insertion.
Troubleshooting common issues
- Tools not appearing? Try restarting your client.
- Getting errors when prompting? Check that your JSON config is valid.
- Still stuck? Disconnect and re-authorise the Canva MCP Server.
- Seeing fewer design tools than expected in Claude? That's expected. Canva's 9 design tools have been simplified into read_design and edit_design - all the same capabilities are still there, plus new ones. If tools aren't responding, try disconnecting and re-authorising the Canva connector.
