Clever SAML & Rostering Configuration (For Education

Set up Single Sign-On (SSO) for your school system using Clever.

This guide is for Canva for Districts administrators and owners who will manage their school or district’s SSO settings.

Before adding Canva to Clever

  1. Your district will need to complete an application form to receive Canva for Districts. We’ll then provision a special version of Canva for Districts, which you can integrate with Clever. Contact our Sales team to get started.
  2. Please make sure your district is set up with Clever! If your district still needs to be set up with Clever, you can get started by going to this link or by accepting your invitation from Canva Education. For more information on setting up Clever for the first time, please see this guide.

Districts who've previously integrated their SSO and/or SIS systems with Canva will need migration support from us before launching a Clever sync.

Running a Clever sync without migration support from Canva may lead to duplicate schools and/ or duplicate users in Canva, which is very difficult to correct.

We’ll begin working on your migration after you request Canva and you're granted access to the application in Clever - please wait until you've received confirmation from us that your migration is complete, before proceeding to the steps that follow.

Step 1: Add Canva to Clever

You can also follow Clever’s Canva setup guide here.

If your district is already on Clever, you can connect the Canva Education application in one of two ways:

Invitation:

If Canva Education invites you to connect, accept the invitation on your Clever Dashboard home page and continue with the next setup step.

Request:

You can request the Canva Education app by following the steps below.

  1. Log in to your Clever Dashboard and select Applications. From the left navigation, select Add applications.
  2. Search for Canva Education.
  3. You'll then be brought to a page where you can authorise your Canva request. As Clever SSO and rostering for Canva are provided at no cost to the district, you can mark that it has already been purchased for the district.
  4. You'll also be asked if you'd like to request a custom Launch Date. The Launch Date is the first day users can see the Canva icons in their Clever portal. Product access may or may not be available on this day.
  5. Once you've made your selections, select Request.
  6. The app status will appear as Waiting on Approval. Once the Canva team grants you access to the Canva Education app, the status will change to No data shared and you can continue the setup.

Step 2: Copy Setup Details from Clever

Go to the Clever SAML settings page and copy the following details. You’ll need these to complete the setup in Canva.

To view SAML Details in your Clever Dashboard, select the Canva Education app, select Settings, and scroll to SAML Details.

  • ACS URL. This will be the SAML 2.0 endpoint in Canva.
  • Entity ID from Clever and paste it into Canva in the IdP Issuer field.
  • Download Verification Certificate. Open as a text file and copy all text.

Step 3: Set up SAML SSO in Canva

  1. Log in to your Canva account.
  2. On the homepage, select your account profile to open menu.
  3. Choose
    Settings
    .
  4. From the side menu, click the SSO and provisioning tab.
  5. Click Single sign-on (SSO) > Manage > Edit IdP metadata.
  6. Enter your identity provider’s details in the three fields:
    • SSO or login URL: Paste your ACS URL.
    • Entity ID or Issuer URL: Paste your Entity ID.
    • X.509 Public Certificate: Paste all of the contents from your Verification Certificate.
  7. Click Save and next.

Don’t make any changes to the Domain Verification section. We’ll take care of domain verification for your team.

Step 4: Test your SSO login experience

There are two easy ways to test your SSO setup:

Option 1: Use the Test SSO button

If you're still on the Set up SSO page, scroll to the Test your SSO connection section and click Test SSO. If you're starting from the Canva homepage instead:

  1. Select your account profile to open menu.
  2. Choose Settings > SSO and provisioning.
  3. Under Single sign-on (SSO) > Manage > Test SSO.

This lets you quickly check if everything’s working without logging out.

Option 2: Log out and back in using SSO

  1. Before logging out, go to the SSO and provisioning tab.
  2. Click Single sign-on (SSO) > Manage > Configure SSO settings.
  3. Set the login option to Optional for everyone.
  4. Log out of your Canva account.
  5. On the login page, click Continue with email, then select Log in with SSO.

Make sure to test using a student and teacher account. You’ve successfully configured SSO if:

  • You logged in as a teacher and can see the People page.
  • You logged in as a student and can’t see the People page.

Step 5: Set up login and signup controls

Choose how you want people to log in. We recommend requiring SSO for everyone in your domain.

  1. From the homepage, select your account profile to open menu.
  2. Choose Settings > SSO and provisioning.
  3. Click Single sign-on (SSO) > Manage > Configure SSO settings.
  4. Select Required for everyone (domain capture).
  5. Click Save changes.

If you have already set up a different provisioning method with Canva, like OneRoster, you’ll need to contact our Support team to switch to Clever.

  1. On the SSO and provisioning page, click Single sign-on (SSO) > Manage > Configure provisioning.
  2. Click Add provisioning method, then select Clever from the list.
  3. Head over to Clever.
  4. From the Data browser tab, copy your District ID.
  5. Go back to Canva, and paste the ID into the District ID field.
  6. Tick the Sync daily box.
  7. Click Test to check your configuration.
  8. If no errors pop up, click Save configuration, then Sync Now.
  9. Finally, click Save and next.

Syncing may take a few hours to complete. After it’s complete, check if your schools and users have been added. Just go to Settings, then select Teams. You’ll see a list of all the schools that sync in and the total user count per school.

Step 7: Share Canva Education with relevant schools in your district

Please refer to Clever's Canva Education setup guide to wrap things up and share Canva Education with relevant schools in your district.

If you run into issues with the Clever set up, please refer to their guide or contact Clever.
