I can’t edit my photo, WebGL isn’t enabled
WebGL is a technology that helps run the Canva photo editor. You can have photo editing issues if WebGL isn’t enabled or supported by your browser or device.
For a smooth photo editing experience, check if your browser or device supports WebGL and make sure to enable it.
Check if your browser supports WebGL
To check if your browser supports WebGL, visit this WebGL checker page. A spinning cube means that WebGL is enabled and working properly on your browser.
If your browser doesn’t support WebGL, see the sections below on how to enable it.
Enable WebGL on your browser
Many browsers already support WebGL. If WebGL is supported but isn’t working properly, try updating your browser to its latest version.
If you’re using your browser’s latest version and WebGL is still not working, learn how to enable it manually from your browser’s settings.
Enabling WebGL on Google Chrome
- Enter “chrome://settings” in your browser address bar, or click in the upper corner of your browser.
- Select Settings.
- Enter “hardware acceleration” in the search bar.
- Toggle on Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Relaunch your browser.
- Enter “chrome://gpu” in your browser address bar.
- Under Graphics Feature Status, check if WebGL and WebGL2 have the Hardware accelerated status. If you don’t see the “Hardware accelerated” status, it means that Google Chrome has automatically disabled WebGL because of potential issues.
Enabling WebGL on Mozilla Firefox
WebGL is automatically supported in the latest versions of Firefox. You can check for the WebGL status to see if it’s enabled or disabled.
- Enter “about:support” in your browser address bar.
- Scroll down to the Graphics section.
- Check the details under WebGL 1 Driver Renderer. If it shows your device’s graphic card details (e.g. Apple -- Apple M1, etc.), it means WebGL is supported.
- If you see “WebGL is blocked for your graphics card or graphics driver version”, it means Firefox has automatically disabled WebGL because of potential issues.
Enabling WebGL on Safari
- From the menu bar, click Safari and then Preferences.
- Select Websites. If you don’t see WebGL on the side, it means it’s already enabled on your browser.
- Under WebGL, if you see a canva.com option, click on it and select Allow on the drop-down menu.
- Under WebGL, If you don’t see a canva.com option, look for When visiting other websites and select Ask or Allow from the drop-down menu.
Enabling WebGL on Edge
- Enter “edge://settings/system” in your browser address bar.
- Toggle on Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Relaunch your browser.
- Enter “edge://gpu” in your browser address bar.
- Under Graphics Feature Status, check if WebGL has the Hardware accelerated status. If you don’t see the “Hardware accelerated” status, it means that Edge has automatically disabled WebGL because of potential issues.
WebGL is enabled, but I've been alerted about performance issues
You might encounter performance issues when using the Photo Editor on older devices or those without dedicated graphics hardware.
If you see this alert but believe your device doesn’t fall into this category, please try the troubleshooting steps below.
What to do if WebGL isn’t supported by your browser or device
If you’re still having issues enabling WebGL, here are some things to try.
- Ensure that your browser, operating system, and graphics drivers are up to date.
- Try a different browser or device. Learn about the browsers you can switch to in Technical requirements.
- Check if your device’s graphics card supports WebGL. If your graphics card doesn’t support WebGL, consider upgrading your device’s graphics card. You may need to ask assistance from your IT about this. See this page that lists browsers and graphics cards that support WebGL.
