Connect Canva to Moodle

You can connect Canva Education to your school's Moodle learning management system (LMS). This lets teachers and students access Canva directly from their courses. There are two integration methods: Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.3 (recommended) and LTI 1.1.

School administrators can add Canva as a tool for individual courses or enable it across all courses.

Prepare for setup

Before setting up the Moodle integration, make sure you:

  • Have a Canva Education account.
  • Have admin access to your school or district team.
  • Have admin permissions in Moodle to add external tools..
  • Have enabled LMS integrations in Canva

Confirm if you’re in the right team

Before configuring the integration, make sure you’re using the correct Canva team:

  • For a single school or district, use your school or district team.
  • For multi-school setups, an organisation admin should configure the integration.

Add Canva Education as a Moodle tool (LTI 1.3)

Use this method if your school supports LTI 1.3. It's the recommended option because it's more secure.

  • Log in to Moodle as an administrator.
  • Click Site Administration, then Plugins, and finally Manage tools.
  • Click configure a tool manually. However, if you’ve previously set up the Canva LTI 1.1 app, click on its Settings icon instead.
  • Get Canva configuration details:
    • Go to the LMS integrations page on Canva.
    • Select Moodle as the chosen LMS and go to Next step.
    • Make sure LTI 1.3 (recommended) is selected and go to Next step.
    • Keep this page open – you'll need to copy information from here in the next steps.
  • Back on Moodle, enter the following details:
    • Tool name: Canva Education
    • Tool URL: Enter Redirection URL from Canva settings page
    • LTI Version: LTI 1.3
    • Public Key Type: Keyset URL
    • Public Keyset: Paste the Public Keyset URL from your Canva LMS integrations page
    • Initiate Login URL: Paste the Initiate Login URL from your Canva LMS integrations page
    • Redirection URL(s): Paste the Redirection URL from your Canva LMS integrations page
    • Tool configuration usage: Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool
    • Default Launch Container: New Window. Make sure to tick Supports Deep Linking (Content-Item Message)
  • Under privacy, set the following:
    • Share launcher’s name with tool: Always
    • Share launcher’s email with tool: Always
  • Click Save Changes.
  • After saving, click on the details icon on the new app. A popup with tool configuration details will appear.
  • Back on the Canva LMS integrations page, select Next step. Enter the following:
    • Client ID: Paste Client ID from Moodle
    • Platform ID: Paste Platform ID from Moodle
  • Select Finish setup. You should now see a summary of your new configuration
Click the Connection guide link for a guide on how to test if your connection was successful.

Add Canva Education as a Moodle tool (LTI 1.1)

Use this method if your school can't use LTI 1.3. LTI 1.1 is an older standard but still works.

  • Log in to your Moodle account.
  • Click Site Administration, then Plugins, and finally Manage tools.
  • Click configure a tool manually.
  • Enter the following details:
    • Tool Name: Canva Education
    • Tool URL: https://www.canva.com/lti/launch
    • LTI Version: LTI 1.0/1.1
    • Consumer Key: Paste this from your Canva Settings page (see article on enabling LMS integration)
    • Shared Secret: Copy/paste from Canva settings
    • Tool Configuration Usage: Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool
    • Default Launch Container: New Window. Make sure to check Supports Deep Linking (Content-Item Message)
  • Under privacy, set the following:
    • Share launcher’s name with tool: Always
    • Share launcher’s email with tool: Always
  • Click Save Changes.
  • Canva Education will now be added as a tool.

You can set up a Canva Education shortcut link on Moodle. This will let other teachers and students launch Canva from their Moodle accounts.

  1. Log into your Moodle account and select your course.
  2. From the top-right corner, click Turn editing on.
  3. Click Add activity or resource. A prompt will appear.
  4. Click Canva Education.
  5. Give the activity or resource a name (e.g. Canva Education Launch Shortcut).
  6. Click Save.

If you can’t find the Canva Education option, please ask your district or school leader to contact us here so we can set up your entire school district on Canva. After our team approves the application, they then have to connect Canva to Moodle before it appears on your Moodle account.

Manage linked Canva accounts

Users can link one Canva account per platform (such as Google or Clever).

If a user previously linked multiple accounts, they can continue using them. If one is removed, they may not be able to reconnect more than one account per platform.

Can students access Canva through Moodle without a Canva account?

Students need a Canva for Education account. They can create one or sign in when they first access Canva from Moodle.

Why can't I find Canva in Moodle?

Canva appears only after the LMS integration has been set up. Check that the integration is complete or contact your school administrator.

What's the difference between LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3?

LTI 1.3 is newer and more secure. Use it when available.
