Changes to my design didn’t save

If the changes you make to your design are not saving, we’re here to help. Here are steps to make sure you don’t lose your design changes. We’ll also help you avoid this problem going forward.

Having trouble saving a copy of your design to your device? Here are some things you can do.

Solution 1: Manually select the Save button

Canva automatically saves designs every few seconds after edits. Make sure the

save icon is displayed on the menu bar before you close your design.

If you notice that your changes are not auto-saving:

  1. Go to File then select Save.
  2. Make sure you see “All changes are saved” next to the Save button. The
save icon should also appear on the menu bar.

If these steps don’t work, move on to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Create a new design file and copy your unsaved design

If you still have your design open and you notice that changes are not auto-saving, try to create a new design file and copy your existing design.

  1. On your browser, open a new tab and go to Canva.
  2. Create the same design file in the new tab.
  3. Go to your existing design, then copy all the elements.
  4. Paste the copied pages to the new design file in another tab.
  5. This time, make sure the changes are automatically saving.

Solution 3: Check the Canva status page

Check Canva’s status now to see if there are ongoing issues. Go to the status page.

Solution 4: What to do if you see the error “We’ve locked the editor because we couldn’t save your changes”

If you see this error message, try not to select "continue editing" as all changes you make from that point might not save.

If you have a stable internet connection, the error usually goes away after a few seconds. If it doesn’t, here’s what you can do.

  • Refresh your browser page or open your design in another tab.
  • If you’re using the Canva for Desktop app, try to close then reopen the app.
  • If the error still doesn’t go away, try this solution.

Solution 5: Make a Copy of Design

If you encounter a sync error while saving your design, you can resolve it by using the Make a Copy option that will appear. This option helps prevent data loss and allows you to continue working without getting stuck.

Here’s what to do:

  1. When the sync error occurs, choose Make a Copy.
  2. The copy becomes a new design, and the original design remains unchanged.
  3. The copy won’t retain the original sharing settings, so you’ll need to re-share it manually.

This ensures you can keep editing without losing progress.

How to avoid unsaved design changes going forward

Here are some things you can do:

  • Check if your browser or mobile app version is updated. Update your browser or app to its latest version if needed. For browsers, make sure that JavaScript is enabled. You can also try switching browsers. Learn more about our minimum technical requirements.
  • Ensure you have a fast and stable internet connection.
