Use lines to connect shapes and create diagrams or flowcharts
Flowcharts combine shapes and connector lines to show how steps relate. Here’s how to build a structured diagram in Canva using flowchart tools.
Add and choose shapes
Canva includes a Flowchart shapes section in the Elements tab with commonly used symbols, such as:
- Terminator: Start / End
- Process: Step or action
- Decision (diamond): Branching point
- Sub-process: Linked or repeatable workflow
- Data / Input / Output: Information entering or leaving the process.
- From the editor side panel, select Elements.
- Under Browse categories, select Shapes.
- Scroll down to Flowchart shapes, select See all.
- Drag and drop a shape to your design.
Add and connect lines
Connector lines show how steps are linked in your flowchart.
To add a connector line:
- Press L on your keyboard.
- Choose a line from the Elements tab.
- Or go to Tools, then select Lines in the editor.
To connect a line to a shape:
- Select the line you want to connect to a shape.
- Drag the line’s endpoint to the edge of a shape.
- When it snaps to the border, it’s connected.
- Move the shape — the line will stay attached.
Label connectors
Double-click a connector to add a label, like Yes, No, or a condition. Labels make branches and transitions easier to understand.
Build the flow
As you build out your flowchart:
- Duplicate shapes to keep styling consistent (Shortcuts: Ctrl+D (Windows) or ⌘+D (Mac).
- Align shapes vertically or horizontally.
- Keep spacing consistent.
- Avoid diagonal lines unless necessary.
- Place decision shapes along the main path and label each branch clearly.
- Lines and shapes remain connected throughout layout changes.
Update shapes without breaking connections
Switch a shape type (e.g., rectangle to diamond) at any time. Connected lines stay attached and adjust automatically.
Refine and finalize
- Align and distribute shapes for a professional layout.
- Adjust layering so shapes appear above connectors.
- Group completed sections to protect structure.
The result is a clear, durable diagram suitable for team use or documentation.
