Create and manage QR codes in Canva
Add a QR code to your design so people can scan it to reach a link. Canva has two QR code tools: Static QR Codes for a quick, fixed link, and Dynamic QR codes for a link you can update later and track.
Static vs. dynamic QR codes
Feature | Static QR Codes | Dynamic QR codes |
|---|---|---|
Editable destination | No | Yes |
Trackable analytics | No | Yes (Business, Enterprise, Nonprofit) |
Requires reprinting for content updates | Yes | No |
Canva logo | No | No (Business, Enterprise, Nonprofit) |
Pattern and corner customisation | No | Yes |
Custom logo upload | No | Yes (Business, Enterprise, Nonprofit) |
Use Static QR Codes if:
- Your link is permanent and won't change, like a poster pointing to your website.
- You want a quick code with no setup. Just enter a URL and generate.
- You don't need to track scans.
- You want the same features regardless of your plan.
Use Dynamic QR codes if:
- You want to change the destination link after printing or sharing.
- You want to reuse a QR code for something new after it's served its purpose — like updating an event flyer's link once the event is over.
- You want to customise corners, patterns, or logos.
- You want to track scans with Insights (Business, Enterprise, Nonprofit)
Create a QR code
You can create either type of QR code from Apps or from Elements. Dynamic QR codes are available in all markets except China, on web and mobile.
Create a QR code via Apps
Add dynamic and customisable QR codes to your designs without leaving Canva. Powered by Hovercode, customise your QR codes by adding a logo, border, your brand colour, and more.
- From the editor, select Apps and search "QR code."
- Both Static QR codes and Dynamic QR codes appear in the results, select the one you need.
- For a static code: In the URL field, enter the web address you want the code to link to. Optionally, customise the background colour, foreground colour, and margin, then select Save.
- For a dynamic code: Select a pattern, then in the URL field, enter the web address you want the code to link to. Optionally, name it so it's easy to find later, then select Save.
Dynamic QR codes feature also shows up under "More from Canva."
Create a QR code via Elements tab
- From the editor, go to Elements and search "QR code." A banner appears with two options.
- Select Create static to open Static QR codes, or Create dynamic to open Dynamic QR codes.
Static QR codes don't include the Canva logo, and their link can't be changed after creation.
Customise your dynamic QR code
Change the appearance of your QR code to match your design or brand. A live preview shows how your QR code looks as you customise.
Select the QR code in your design, then select Edit to change:
- Colours — code and background colours, with up to 9 recent colours saved. Brand Kit colours are available on Pro and above.
- Patterns and corners — choose from available styles. Visuals don't affect scannability.
- Logo — preset logos are available on Business, Enterprise, and Nonprofit. Uploading a custom logo or removing the Canva logo also needs one of those plans.
Changing the visual design means reprinting if the code is already printed.
Manage your Dynamic QR code
Update the destination (no reprint needed): Select the QR code, select Edit, update the URL, then select Save.
Edit visuals (reprint needed if printed): Select the QR code, select Edit, then update the pattern, corner style, colour, or logo.
Editing permissions: Only the person who created a QR code can edit its link and settings — even if you have edit access to the design. If you didn't create it, ask the owner to make the change, or create a new QR code you can fully control.
Static QR codes can't be edited after creation — their link is fixed for good.
View QR code scan details
Select the QR code, then select Insights from the toolbar to see total scans, unique scans, locations, and device types.
Insights is available on Canva Business, Canva Enterprise, and Canva for Nonprofit. Free and Pro users will see an upgrade prompt for new QR codes.
People in the same brand can view Insights if they have edit access to the design. People from a different brand can't, even with edit access.
Best practices when designing with QR codes
- Minimum size: Use QR codes no smaller than 2 x 2 cm (0.79 x 0.79 in).
- Shorten your URL: Shorter links scan more reliably.
- Use colour contrast: Avoid transparencies. If you can't use contrasting colours, add a solid border in a different colour.
- Keep it clean: Avoid placing other content on or around the QR code.
- Leave a quiet zone: Leave blank space around the code, at least four times the width of a single module.
FAQs
What's the difference between QR codes and Dynamic QR codes?
Static QR Codes generate a fixed link that can't be changed after creation, with no scan tracking. Dynamic QR codes let you update the destination anytime and view scan data with Insights.
Can I convert a static QR code into a dynamic one, or vice versa?
No, in either direction.
Why do I see a Canva logo on my QR code?
Dynamic QR codes on Free, Pro and Education plans include the Canva logo by default. Upgrade to Business or Enterprise to remove or replace it. Static QR codes never include the Canva logo.
Can I use Dynamic QR codes on mobile?
Yes. Dynamic QR codes support both web and mobile.
Why don't I see Insights?
Insights is available on Canva Business, Canva Enterprise, and Canva for Nonprofit. Free and Pro users see an upgrade prompt for new QR codes.
