Add Unsubscribe, Update preferences, and View in browser links in emails
Give recipients more control over how they receive and interact with your emails by adding special links in your Canva email design. These include:
- Unsubscribe link
- Let people stop receiving future emails.
- Update preferences link
- Let people manage their email settings and contact details.
- View in browser link
- Let people open the email in a web browser.
Canva email templates include these links by default. When you publish with an ESP integrated with Canva, such as Mailchimp, Klaviyo, or Constant Contact, Canva automatically formats the links for that platform.
For more information, click on the following Email service providers (ESPs) Help Center below:
An Email Service Provider (ESP) is a tool you use to send and track bulk emails, like Mailchimp, Klaviyo, or Constant Contact.
Before you start
- These links only work when you send them through partner platforms that Canva is integrated with, like Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or Klaviyo.
- They do not work if you send emails with Gmail, Outlook, or other personal email tools.
- There’s no need to use codes or HTML. Canva handles the link setup automatically when you select from the Link menu.
Add email links on the web
- Open your email design.
- Select the text or element you want to link.
- Select the Link button from the editor toolbar.
- Under Email links, select the link type:
- Unsubscribe for opt-out links
- Update preferences for preference management
- View in browser for web viewing
- Select Done.
Compliance links use the following syntax | What’s happening |
|---|---|
Unsubscribe link {{ unsubscribe }} | The email special link becomes a {{ unsubscribe }} merge tag when the artefact is generated (HTML bundle). When published via a supported ESP, Canva automatically converts this tag into the correct format for that platform. |
Update preferences link {{ update_preferences }} | Applying this feature adds the {{ update_preferences }} syntax, which works with email service providers like Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or Klaviyo. Canva automatically converts the syntax to match each platform's specific format: |
View in browser link {{ view_in_browser }} | Canva’s {{ view_in_browser }} merge tag automatically updates to match your email platform’s format. |
Add Unsubscribe links
Unsubscribe links let recipients opt out of future emails. Including them helps you follow email laws such as CAN-SPAM and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Canva includes unsubscribe links by default in all email templates and footer sections. To add one manually, select Unsubscribe from the Email links menu.
When someone clicks the unsubscribe link
When your email is sent through a supported ESP, clicking the unsubscribe link takes the recipient to an unsubscribe page provided by that platform. These pages follow industry standards and can often be customized to match your branding.
This makes sure the unsubscribe process is:
- In line with compliance laws
- Managed by your ESP
- Easy for your audience to use
Limitations
- If you share your email directly from Canva without using an ESP (for example, as a downloaded file you send from your own inbox), the unsubscribe link will not manage opt-outs.
- Resolution: To make sure the unsubscribe link works, publish your email through a supported ESP instead of sending it manually.
- The email service provider (ESP), not Canva, stores and manages the unsubscribe list and opt-out preferences.
- Resolution: To manage unsubscribes and comply with privacy laws, make sure to send your email through a supported ESP.
- The exact behavior and styling of the unsubscribe experience depends on the selected ESP.
- Resolution: Check your ESP settings to customize the unsubscribe page and ensure it aligns with your brand.
Add Update preferences links
Update preferences links let recipients change their email preferences and contact information. This helps keep your audience engaged with relevant content.
Canva includes these links by default in selected templates and footer sections. To add one manually, select Update preferences from the Email links menu.
Limitation
- The ESP, not Canva, stores and manages the unsubscribe list and opt-out preferences.
- Resolution: To manage unsubscribes and comply with privacy laws, make sure to send your email through a supported ESP.
When someone clicks the Update preferences link
When recipients click the "Update preferences" link in your email, they are directed to a preferences management page hosted by your ESP. This helps keep things consistent and compliant with their standards. You can often customize this page in your ESP to match your brand.
Add View in browser links
View in browser links give recipients a way to see your email in a web browser. This helps when email apps have trouble displaying your design.
Canva includes these links by default in header sections. To add one manually, select View in browser from the Email links menu.
When someone selects View in browser
When someone clicks the View in browser link, they’re taken to a web version of the email, hosted by your ESP. This version:
- Renders your design as intended
- Displays all images without blocking
- Keeps formatting consistent across devices
- Is accessible for users with limited email support
It also keeps all personalization and dynamic content, so it looks great for every viewer.
FAQs
- Do I need to add an unsubscribe link to every email?
