General sales tax
What is sales tax?
Sales tax applies to most goods and services sold for use or consumption. It’s also known as a consumption tax, since the final consumer usually pays it. Sales tax is known by different names around the world, including:
Abbreviation | Name | Common In |
GST | Goods and Services Tax | APAC |
HST | Harmonised Sales Tax | Canada |
JCT | Consumption Tax | Japan |
PST | Provincial Sales Tax | Canada |
QST | Quebec Sales Tax | Quebec, Canada |
SST | Digital Sales and Service Tax | Malaysia |
SUT | Sales and Use Tax | United States |
VAT | Value Added Tax | EMEA and LATAM |
Who has to pay sales tax?
Generally sales tax is invoiced by the supplier (Canva) that is selling goods or services and collected from the customer. Canva then pays these sales tax to the Tax Authorities. Sales tax is usually invoiced by the supplier (Canva) and collected from the customer. Canva then passes the sales tax on to the relevant Tax Authority.
If you’re a VAT / GST-registered business customer or tax-exempt organization, you may not need to pay sales tax. Check the “I’m purchasing for my business. How does sales tax apply?” section to see if you’re eligible for a sales tax exemption in your country.
Does Canva’s price include sales tax?
United States & Canada
If you're in the United States or Canada and sign up for a paid Canva subscription after 31 October 2025, the advertised price won't include sales tax. See “How does Canva calculate sales tax?” for details on how your final price is worked out.
If you subscribed on or before 30 October 2025, including for print or domain purchases, your price will still include sales tax.
Rest of World
In other regions, Canva’s advertised price includes sales tax.
If you're in the Philippines and don't provide a valid VAT ID, your price won't change. However, your invoice will show that it includes 12% VAT. If you provide a valid VAT ID, VAT won't be included in your invoice.
EU business customers (VAT-registered)
If you’re an EU-based business customer and you provide a valid EU VAT registration number, your purchase may be subject to the reverse charge mechanism (VAT Directive 2006/112/EC, Art. 196).
This means:
Canva doesn’t charge or collect VAT on the invoice. Your invoice may show a note such as “VAT subject to reverse charge.”
The listed price remains unchanged, and you’ll generally self-account for VAT in your VAT return, based on local rules.
To understand how tax is applied by region, see Canva sales tax per country.
How does Canva calculate sales tax?
Sales tax rules vary by country, and Canva must comply with local laws. In many regions, we’re required to collect and pay sales tax on electronic services.
If you buy a subscription or one-time license, we’ll use your billing address to calculate the tax based on the rate at the time of your charge. For print products, we use your shipping address instead.
If you're in the United States, we need your full street address to calculate sales tax accurately. In Canada, we need your postal code.
To make sure you're charged the correct amount, keep your billing and shipping address up to date.
Why do I need to provide my full address in the US?
In the US, sales tax rates can vary not just by state, but also by city, county, or even within the same ZIP code. We ask for your full street address so we can apply the right local tax rate for your location.
Why am I being charged sales tax for a different location?
We use your billing address to calculate sales tax on subscriptions and one-time licenses. For print products, we use your shipping address instead.
Make sure your billing and shipping addresses are up-to-date so you’re charged the right amount.
What happens if I update my billing or shipping address?
We use your billing address, or shipping address for print products, to calculate sales tax on your invoice. If you update your address, your sales tax may change, especially if you're in the US. Learn more in the section “How does Canva calculate sales tax?”.
Please note: Updates to your billing details, shipping address, or tax ID will only apply to future invoices. We can’t update invoices older than 30 days. If you were charged tax based on outdated info, contact your local tax authority to request a refund.
Why did the sales tax amount on my invoice change?
We regularly review the products and services we sell, and where they're offered, to stay compliant with local laws. From time to time, we may update how we apply sales tax, including rate changes or newly charging tax on some purchases, to meet tax and regulatory requirements.
Why is sales tax different for my subscription and print purchase?
Sales tax amounts might differ between your subscription and print purchase for a few reasons:
- Your print order's shipping address is different from your billing address.
- Your local tax authority applies different tax rules for print products and subscriptions.
- We can’t apply a tax exemption to print products that are made locally in your country.
To help ensure you're charged the right amount:
- Keep your billing address up to date in Settings > Billing > Billing details
- Double-check your shipping address at checkout for print orders
- Remember, tax rates can change based on local Tax Authority decisions
I’m purchasing for my business. How does GST apply?
In some countries, you may not need to pay sales tax on Canva purchases, if you meet local requirements.
If you're a VAT- or GST-registered business, you may be exempt. See How do I provide my tax identification number? in Request tax-exempt invoices.
Some countries don’t allow tax exemptions, even if you provide a valid tax ID: Australia, Barbados, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Switzerland (incl. Liechtenstein), The Bahamas, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Vietnam.
If you're in the United States or Canada, you may qualify for a sales tax exemption if you meet local requirements and provide valid supporting documents. See How do I submit my sales tax exemption certificate? in Request tax-exempt invoices.
Canva can’t offer tax advice. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, speak to a local tax adviser.
Need to request a tax exemption? See Request tax-exempt invoices for:
- How do I provide my tax identification number?
You can also add or update a non-exempt Tax ID from your Billing settings so it appears on future invoices. Adding a Tax ID does not automatically make your account tax-exempt, and applicable taxes may still be charged.

- How do I submit my sales tax exemption certificate?
- What happens if my exemption certificate expires?
In my country we have e-invoicing rules. Will I receive an e-invoice?
Canva is usually registered as a non-resident digital services provider in most countries. Exceptions include Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Because we’re not registered as a local business in most countries, we’re generally not required to issue e-invoices under local rules. Check your local regulations or speak to a tax advisor if you’re unsure what’s required for your region.
If you're a B2C customer in Taiwan, you'll receive an e-GUI electronic invoice from Canva. For more details, see the “Taiwan” section in our Canva sales tax per country article.
