Set up Google Analytics for your Canva website
Google Analytics helps you understand how visitors interact with your published Canva website. After you connect it, you can view activity like page views, traffic sources, and session duration in your Google Analytics account.
This feature is available on Pro, Business, Enterprise and Teams plans. Cookie banners aren’t available for Canva Websites in China. Google Analytics isn’t supported in this region.
Before you start
Make sure you have:
- A Google Analytics account. If you don't have one, create a free account at analytics.google.com.
- Your Measurement ID from Google Analytics. It looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX.
- A custom domain to publish your Canva website to.
- A privacy policy or cookie policy published on your website that discloses your use of Google Analytics and explains how visitor data is collected, used, and stored.
- A clear understanding of the cookie and privacy laws that apply to your visitors, including ePrivacy/PECR (EU/UK), GDPR (EU/UK), CCPA (California), and any other applicable regional laws.
Connect Google Analytics to your website
- Open your Canva website design.
- Select the dropdown beside Publish.
- Select Settings, go to Google Analytics.
- Enter your Measurement ID.
- Select Publish.
Your Google Analytics and cookie banner settings will apply after your website is published.
Once you save your Measurement ID, Google Analytics will start tracking new visitor sessions on your website. It can take 24–48 hours for data to appear in your Google Analytics account.
When you connect Google Analytics, Canva automatically turns on a cookie consent banner for your website. You can customise the banner from the link in the Google Analytics section, or go to Publish, then Cookie banner. Note that enabling Google Analytics without a properly configured consent banner may not be sufficient to meet your legal obligations. Make sure the banner correctly reflects how you use visitor data before publishing. See Add a cookie consent banner to your Canva website for more.
What you can track with Google Analytics
After connecting, Google Analytics collects data about your website visitors, including:
- Number of visits and page views
- Traffic sources (how visitors found your site)
- Location and device type
- Time spent on your site
To view your analytics data, go to analytics.google.com and open your property.
As the site owner, you're responsible for making sure your use of Google Analytics complies with applicable privacy laws in every region where your visitors are located. Canva provides the tools to help, including a cookie consent banner, but compliance is your responsibility.
Before enabling Google Analytics, you'll need to agree to Google Analytics Terms of Service. You should review these terms carefully. By enabling Google Analytics, you take on obligations directly with Google, independent of your agreement with Canva. You'll also need a privacy or cookie policy on your site that explains how visitor data is collected and used. You'll be asked to provide a link to it when you set up Google Analytics.
When you enable Google Analytics, you become responsible for obtaining visitor consent before tracking begins. This is required in many regions, including the EU, UK, and California.
Canva's cookie banner helps you collect consent. Visitor preferences are stored locally on your visitor's device for 12 months and aren't accessible to Canva or you as the site owner. After 12 months, visitors will be asked again. Canva's cookie banner is a tool to help you collect consent, it's not a complete compliance solution. You remain responsible for ensuring your consent mechanism meets the specific requirements of the laws that apply to you.
Troubleshooting
Google Analytics isn't showing data
It can take up to 48 hours for data to appear after you first connect. If data still isn't showing after 48 hours:
- Check that your Measurement ID is correct. It should start with G- and contain no spaces.
- Make sure your website is published, not saved as a draft.
- Check that your website is on a custom domain. (Google Analytics is limited to paid users with custom domains; free Canva subdomains are blocked.)
- Make sure the URL in your Google Analytics account matches your published website URL.
I can't find the Google Analytics setting
Google Analytics is only available on Pro, Teams plans. If you're on a free plan, you'll see an option to upgrade to Pro. Select Upgrade to access Google Analytics and other Pro features.
You see this error in the Measurement ID field: "Please enter a valid Measurement ID (e.g., G-XXXXXXXXXX)"
What can cause this
The Measurement ID isn't formatted correctly. Canva expects an ID that starts with "G-" followed by letters and numbers, with no spaces or extra characters.
What to do
- Go to your Google Analytics account and select Admin, then Data Streams, then your stream.
- Copy your Measurement ID. It starts with G-, followed by letters and numbers.
- Return to Canva and enter the correct ID.
Once you enter a valid ID, the error disappears and you'll be prompted to customise your cookie banner.
Your website will still publish, but the ID won't be used for tracking. Google Analytics won't track visitors, and your cookie consent banner won't appear on your published site.
