Update folder permissions in Canva

Folder permissions let teams control how others interact with shared content. This article explains how to update folder permissions and when to use each access level.

Update permissions on an existing folder

  1. Open the
Projects (From the left navigation sidebar, you can choose between All projects, Your projects, Shared with you, and Available offline)
  2. Find the folder under All, Folders, or Your projects
  3. Select Share or the Access icon to see who has access
  4. Adjust access for each person or group. You can choose:
    • Can edit and share
    • Can edit
    • Can view
    • Remove access
  5. Changes apply immediately to all users with access

Troubleshooting access issues

  • Can’t edit a file? They might have view-only access. Update their access to Can edit.
  • Folder not appearing? They may not have access, or it might be limited to a group they’re not part of.
  • Seeing unexpected edits? Check who has editing or sharing access. Limit access to what’s needed.

Why you’re seeing a parent-level folder update notice

This message means the folder is controlled by a folder above it.

To fix it, go to the parent folder (one level up) to change its permissions. If you don’t have access, contact your team admin to update it for you.
