Generate AI backgrounds with Magic Background
Use Magic Background to quickly create backgrounds that match your text and images
Magic Background is currently not available in China, and does not support responsive formats such as Docs and Websites.

How Magic Background works
- Magic Background highlights key text or focal points, separating background from foreground elements
- It works best with:
- Readable text
- Distinct foreground visuals
- Clean, uncluttered designs
- Create or open your design. Magic Background works with fixed-size designs like Presentations, Instagram Posts, and Posters (not Docs or Websites).
- Make sure your design contains at least one element (like text or an image).
- Select the background layer in your design, then select Edit from the editor toolbar.
- On the Edit Page panel, select Magic BG.
- (Optional) Under Describe your background idea, type in how you’d like your background to look.
- Magic Background will use your prompt to generate suggestions.
- Select Generate. Magic Background will generate 4 background options for you to choose from.
- Select a generated option to preview it. To see more options, update your description and select Generate again.
- Choose a background to apply it to your design.
FAQs
Why isn’t Magic Background working for me?
You may be using an unsupported format (e.g., Docs or Websites).
Magic Background only works with fixed-size formats like Presentations, Instagram Posts, Posters, and similar static designs.
Responsive formats are formats that automatically adjust to different screen sizes, such as Canva Docs and Websites.
Can I refine or regenerate the background?
Yes. Just use the Generate again or Surprise me options. You can also input a custom prompt for style guidance.

Magic Background is part of Canva’s suite of AI tools built to support creativity with care. We:
- We may automatically review what you type into AI tools to help detect and prevent unsafe content.
- We block or restrict outputs that may violate our Terms of Use
- We encourage you to report content that seems inappropriate.
