Use Magic Design to generate design templates
Magic Design helps you get started by suggesting templates based on your content. Whether you're creating a presentation, social post, video, or document, Magic Design analyzes the images, text, or ideas you provide and recommends layouts that match your theme and style.
You can customize these templates with:
- Your own photos, videos, and text
- Canva’s stock images, videos, and music
- AI-generated content from tools like Magic Media or Canva AI Video
Magic Design does not generate videos from scratch. It helps arrange and stylize your content, but any video generation happens via Magic Media or Canva AI Video.
Compare Magic tools for your content
- Canva AI Video: Generates longer (8-second), high-quality videos with sound directly from a text prompt. It’s best for cinematic or polished storytelling.
- Magic Media: Generates shorter (4-second), silent video clips or static images from a text prompt. It’s great for quick visuals or short animation‑styles effects.
- Magic Design: Sets up your layout using ready‑made templates that adapt to your content. It can pull in files from Canva AI Video or Magic Media, but does not generate video on its own.
Use Magic Design to generate design templates
From the homepage
- Select Canva AI.
- In the search box, enter a short description of the design you’d like to create.
- If you want to browse your files, existing designs, or Brand and submit them with your prompt, select the Add icon. Choose from Upload, Add from Canva, Import, or Apply Brand Kit.
- Select from the options Design, Create an image, Video clip. Once you select one of these options, more filter options will appear.
- Select your preferred design type, style, format, etc.
- Press Enter or select Submit.
- Browse the results, then select a template to use in your design.
From the editor
- Open the Templates tab in the side panel.
- Enter a descriptive prompt in the search field. To upload a photo, select the plus icon, then choose Upload.
- Tap Enter.
- Browse existing templates under Search.
- To create new templates via Canva AI, tap Generate.
- Review the generated results and select your preferred template to add it to your design.
What are the limitations of Magic Design?
- Magic Design for Video works with social video formats (such as Instagram Reels and TikTok). It supports 1920 × 1080 px (horizontal), 1080 × 1920 px (vertical), and 1080 × 1080 px (square).
- You can use videos of any size. If a video is very small or very large, the result may not look as sharp.
- Magic Design for Video uses both free and Pro content from the Canva library. On a free account, you can upgrade to Pro, purchase the Procontent, or remove/replace it to download the video.
- When you publish to YouTube, make sure you’re logged in to the account that’s linked to Canva to avoid content claims.
- The more context and instruction you give, the better your result.
- Canva Education admins and teachers can use Magic Design for Videos. It's not available to students.
