Use vertical text in Canva
Use vertical text in Canva to create designs in traditional East Asian layouts, such as posters, menus, and event materials.
The Vertical text feature works with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text.
When vertical text is available
The Vertical text option appears when:
- Your text is in a supported language (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean)
- You are using a supported design type like presentations or posters (not Canva Docs or Canva Sheets)
Set up your language
To enable vertical text, make sure your language settings are correct.
- If you haven’t already, switch your language settings.
- If you’re in a different location and need to use a Chinese, Japanese or Korean text, you can use Translate in the editor to convert your text.
Make text vertical
- From the editor, add a text box to your design.
- Enter your text in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, then select the text box.
- If your language settings is not in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, translate your text.
- In the toolbar, select Vertical text. Your text will automatically switch to a vertical layout.
- To revert the format, select the Vertical text button again.
FAQs
Can I make vertical text without typing in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean?
You’ll need to convert your text into a supported language first. Use the Translate option in the editor (for example, to Japanese). Once converted, the Vertical text option will appear
