Generating backgrounds for photos

Generate photo backgrounds from the editor
- Select the photo you want to edit.
- From the editor toolbar, select Edit.
- Under Tools, select BG Generator.
- In the text field, describe the background you’d like to see. Select Inspire me if you’d like ideas or suggestions, or Clear if you want to start over again.
- Select Generate, and wait for the background to be processed.
- Select from the different backgrounds generated.
- Select the Sun icon to choose between additional options such as Balanced relight or Maximum relight.
- Select Generate again if you’d like to see different backgrounds for the same prompt.
Generate photo backgrounds from the Projects tab
- From the homepage, go to Projects, then select All projects.
- Go to the Images.
- Hover over the photo you want to edit, then select More.
- Select Edit image.
- Under Tools, select BG Generator.
- In the text field, describe the background you’d like to see. Select Inspire me if you’d like ideas or suggestions, or Clear if you want to start over again.
- Select Generate, and wait for the backgrounds to be processed.
- Select from the different backgrounds generated.
- Select the Sun icon to choose between additional options such as Balanced relight or Maximum relight.
- Select Generate again if you’d like to see different backgrounds for the same prompt.
The editor automatically saves your edits.
To improve generated background results:
- Write descriptive prompts. A prompt like “space” is unlikely to work well, but “Open space with bright stars and a distant planet” is likely to work better.
- Describe the scene, not the object.
- Specify the lighting in the prompt for relighting, such as “harsh lighting”
What are the limitations of BG Generator?
- You can generate backgrounds for 200 images every 24 hours.
- The generated background may be more pixelated than the original background.
- You can’t generate backgrounds for images Canva has marked as unsafe (e.g. nudity, gore).
- Generated results may sometimes have light direction, color, or style that doesn't match the image.
- The generated result may be empty, unexpected, or different from what you intended.
