Set your organization’s data residency preference

Enterprise admins can now choose where their organization's data is stored to help meet internal requirements. Set your preferred data location in your organization's privacy settings to ensure your data stays in your chosen region.

Before you start

  • Available to Organization Admins only.
  • Your organization must be on an Enterprise, Campus, or District plan.
  • Once changed, you can't update the setting again until the data is successfully migrated.

Setting your data residency preference

  1. From your Canva homepage, select Settings.
  2. Select Data and privacy.
  3. Under Data residency, select your preferred region from the dropdown:
    • No Preference
    • United States
    • European Union
  4. Review the migration information that appears.
  5. Select Confirm to apply your choice.

Once you apply the setting, new data will be stored in your selected region. Supported existing data migrates automatically and may take 30 days or more.

What happens during migration

After you confirm your data residency preference:

  • New data stores in your selected region shortly after confirmation.
  • Existing data begins migrating automatically; this may take 30 days or more, depending on your data volume.
  • The data residency setting becomes disabled during the migration process.
  • You can’t update your preference again until migration finishes.
  • If migration is still in progress after the 30-day lock period, the setting will remain disabled until all migrations are complete.

Adding a brand, whether new or existing, can trigger a migration for that team's data.

Supported data types

Different data types migrate at different times.

Currently supported:

  • Designs and comments
  • Media files
  • Folders
  • Audit logs
  • Search indexes

We're continuously expanding data type coverage. Check back regularly for updates.

Troubleshooting

If your data residency control is disabled, this can happen for several reasons:

  • You've changed the setting within the last 30 days (30-day lock period applies)
  • Your organization has an active migration in progress
  • You've recently added a new brand to your organization, which triggers automatic migration

The control remains disabled until both the 30-day lock period expires and all migrations complete.

If migration is taking longer than expected, this is normal for organizations with large amounts of data. Most migrations complete within 30 days or more. Migration errors are not displayed to admins. Contact your Canva representative if you have concerns about migration timing.

If new data types become supported after you've set your preference, existing data for those types will begin migrating automatically. During this time, the setting may become temporarily disabled again.

FAQs

Why can't I change my data residency preference?

The setting is disabled for 30 days after any change. The control may remain disabled longer if migrations are still in progress. Adding new brands to your organization can also trigger migrations that temporarily disable the control.

Will this apply to new brands I add to my organization?

Yes, new brands automatically adopt your organization's selected data residency preference. Adding a new brand triggers migration for that brand's data, which may temporarily disable the data residency control.

Is data residency available in all regions?

Not yet. This setting is currently only available for the US and EU. It’s not supported for Canva China.

Data residency isn’t a compliance solution. It can help support your internal data-hosting requirements, but you’ll need to consult your legal or compliance team for guidance.
