My domain DNS records are still pending
Most pending states are caused by DNS (Domain Name System) still propagating, conflicting A records, or host formatting rules. Use the steps below to identify and fix the issue.
Identify the causes of a pending DNS status
DNS records may stay pending for a few common reasons:
- The record wasn’t added in the format your domain provider expects.
- Another DNS record is causing a conflict.
- DNS changes need time to spread across the internet. The update may not be finished yet.
Below are the clearest steps you can take for a quick fix.
Step 1: Check for conflicting or duplicate A records
If your Canva A record has the same name/host as another existing A record, the domain host won’t know which one to use.
How to fix it:
- Go to your DNS settings in your domain provider
- Look for other A records with the same name/host
- Remove or update the conflicting records
- Add the Canva A record again
If you’re unsure which record is causing the conflict, your domain provider can help confirm this.
Step 2: Make sure the “Host” field matches your provider’s format
Different domain hosts expect different versions of the record name. Try both formats below if you aren’t sure which one your provider requires:
Without the full domain
Record Type | Host | Value | TTL* |
|---|---|---|---|
A | www | 103.169.142.0 | default* |
With the full domain
Record Type | Host | Value | TTL* |
|---|---|---|---|
A | www.example.com | 103.169.142.0 | default* |
Some providers accept only one of these. If the wrong version is used, Canva won’t detect the record.
Your provider may allow editing TTL (Time To Live), but we recommend leaving it as the default value.
Step 3: Add your subdomain to the DNS record
Your subdomain needs to be included in the name/host of your DNS records.
For example, if your domain is “my.example.com” (where “my” is the subdomain), your A record in Canva might look like this:
Your Canva record says:
Record Type | Host | Value |
|---|---|---|
A | www | 103.169.142.0 |
Your actual domain is:
Record Type | Host | Value |
|---|---|---|
A | my.example.com | 103.169.142.0 |
You may need to enter one of these formats for your host:
Record Type | Host | Value |
|---|---|---|
A | www | 103.169.142.0 |
A | www.my.example.com | 103.169.142.0 |
Step 4: Allow time for DNS updates
Most DNS updates take a few minutes, but some providers take longer, up to 72 hours in edge cases.
You can check progress anytime on your Canva Domain settings page.
Step 5: Verify your A record using Google Public DNS
You can use Google Public DNS to check whether your DNS A record is visible globally.
- Go to a public DNS lookup tool that uses Google Public DNS
- Enter your domain name (for example, www.example.com)
- Select Resolve
- Look under the Answer section
If your domain is resolving correctly, the “Answer” section should show:
Value |
|---|
103.169.142.0 |
If it doesn’t:
- Remove any other A records with different values.
- Re-add the Canva A record.
Reasons your DNS value might not appear
If a different value still shows up, or no value is returned at all, these are the most common causes:
- DNS propagation delay. It simply hasn’t finished updating yet.
- Domain is not fully verified. Some domain providers require you to verify your domain (for example, by clicking an email link) before DNS changes take effect.
- Check your inbox for any verification or confirmation emails from your domain provider
- Follow any instructions they include
- Nameservers aren’t pointing to your domain host. If nameservers were changed to custom ones, DNS changes won’t work until those name servers point to the right place again.
- In your domain provider account, check which Nameservers are set
- Make sure they are the nameservers recommended by your domain provider
- If nameservers point somewhere else (for example, to another DNS service), DNS changes must be made there instead
You’re still stuck?
If your DNS record still doesn’t appear correctly in Google Public DNS after following the steps, your domain provider will be able to check:
- Whether your DNS records are saved correctly
- If any hidden or system records exist
- Whether propagation is delayed on their side
They can resolve conflicts or formatting issues that aren’t visible from Canva’s end.
