Brand Controls for designs inside folders
Want a group of designs to follow a specific Brand Kit? Add your preferred Brand Kit to a folder to enable that folder’s Brand Controls. More on this below.
Brand Controls for designs inside folders is only available to Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, and Canva Education administrators, teachers, and brand designers.
If you’re the team admin of Canva Teams, Canva Business, or Canva for Campus, you can set Brand Controls that apply to your whole team for all designs. To learn more about team-level Brand Controls, see Setting up Brand Controls for your team.
Add the Brand Kit you’d like to share with all the folder users.
Administrators, brand designers, teachers, and team members can add a Brand Kit to a folder they have edit access to.
Step 1: Assign a Brand Kit to a folder
- From the homepage side panel, click Brand. You’ll see the landing page of one of your Brand Kits.
- If you’d like to switch to another Brand Kit, select the dropdown and choose the Brand Kit you want to use.
- Next to your Brand Kit’s name, click the (more icon).
- Select Add Brand Kit to folder.
- Select Add to a folder, then select the folder.
You can also add a Brand Kit from the folder. See Adding and removing Brand Kits to a folder.
If your team admin has already set up Brand Controls, it means that when you add a Brand Kit to a folder, the controls will apply to the folder, too. For example, if your color Brand Controls is on for the team, the color control will be applied when you add a Brand Kit to a folder. If you apply Brand Controls directly to a folder, your team-level controls will be overwritten for designs within that folder.
If you remove the Brand Kit from the folder, your team’s Brand Controls will then apply.
Important: Once you enable font or color controls for a folder, designs within that folder will be locked to the assigned Brand Kit. You won't be able to switch to a different Brand Kit from the editor. To use a different Brand Kit, you'll need to work on a design outside of this controlled folder.
Step 2: Adjust the folder’s Brand Controls
Restrict designs to only the folder’s Brand Kit fonts and colors. These will override your team’s Brand Controls.
- From the homepage side panel, click Projects.
- Select the folder you’d like to adjust the Brand Controls.
- Select the Brand Kit tab.
- Next to the Color or Font section, slide the switches to allow only brand colors and fonts.
If this is your first time enabling folder controls, it may take up to an hour to take effect. During this time, your team-level Brand Controls will remain active.
Unable to see the color and font switches
If you’re a team admin, team brand designer, or teacher, this is probably because you’re on a different team. Here’s how to check.

- If it’s not the right one, team switcher to show all the teams that you’re part of.
- Select the team you’d like to switch to from the list.
If you’re a team member, your folder will follow your team’s Brand Controls even if you add a Brand Kit. If you’d like to adjust your folder’s Brand Controls settings, here’s how.
- Add any of your team’s team admins, teachers, and/or team brand designers as a folder editor. See Sharing folders with people in your team.
- Ask them to follow Step 2: Adjusting the folder’s Brand Controls above.
Re-enable team Brand Controls
- From the homepage side panel, select Brand.
- Select the dropdown beside your Brand Kit name.
- Go to Brand Controls.
- Toggle the settings you want to restrict:
- Color control: restrict access to only your brand colors.
- Font control: restrict access to only your brand fonts.
- Design approval: restrict members from publishing without approval.
Disable your folder-level Brand Controls to revert to your team’s Brand Controls.
- If you remove the Brand Kit from the folder, members will lose access to the Brand Kit immediately. To regain access, you can simply add it back.
- Any changes made to the folder Brand Controls will be lost.
