Generate AI music, sound effects, and voiceovers in Canva

Create original background music without leaving your design. Generate music, sound effects, and voiceovers in the Canva editor using AI.

Learn more about how this feature counts toward your AI usage.

You can’t use Canva AI audio generation to:

  • Copy or recreate copyrighted songs
  • Generate audio “in the style of” a specific artist if it’s intended to imitate them
  • Use prompts that request protected brand music or well-known soundtracks

If your request is blocked, try rewriting your prompt to describe mood, genre, instruments, and tempo instead. Learn more about AI music generation: usage and languages.

Team & admin controls

In Canva Teams, Business, and Enterprise accounts, admins can control who can generate music and sound effects.

If an admin turns this setting off, the music and sound effects generation options will be hidden. Learn more about changing access to Magic and AI features.

Note: Voiceover generation isn’t included in the admin control yet.

Generate music

Use Canva AI music generation to create background tracks for videos and presentations. A full audio track runs for 30 seconds.

From the editor

  1. Open a design that supports audio (for example, a video, presentation, or social post). Note: Responsive doctype (like Websites) is not supported.
  2. Select Elements from the side panel, then Audio.
  3. Describe the track you want (for example: “upbeat pop with claps”).
  4. Select the Filter icon to filter the audio results between Free or Pro tracks.
  5. Select the Generate dropdown, then select Music.
  6. Preview results. If all sounds good, add it to your design.

From the homepage

  1. Select Canva AI.
  2. Describe the track you want (for example: “Make me a happy birthday song about Mary”).
  3. Press Enter. Canva AI may ask follow-up questions.
  4. Preview the music and add it to your page.

Prompt tips for better music

  • Include genre, mood, and tempo (e.g., “cinematic, tense, slow build”).
  • Add instruments (e.g., “piano + strings”).
  • Specify length and where it’s used (intro, loopable background, outro).

Generate voiceovers

Use Canva AI Voice generation to turn text into spoken audio for videos, demos, and presentations. Turn text into natural-sounding narration in multiple languages and voices. You can customize tone, pacing, and language to match your project. See Turn text into voiceovers using AI voice in Canva.

Voiceover best practices

  • Use short sentences.
  • Add punctuation to guide pacing.
  • Spell out uncommon abbreviations.

Troubleshooting AI music generation

I can’t see AI music generation

If you don’t see the option to generate music, don’t worry, here are a few possible reasons:

  • The feature may still be rolling out to your account.
  • Your current plan may not include access yet.

My prompt was rejected

If your music request didn’t go through, here are some common reasons:

  • It may have referenced a specific song, artist, or recognizable track.
  • It may have included copyrighted or protected material.
  • It may have included violent or inappropriate themes.

To fix it, try:

  • Removing artist names, song titles, or brand references.
  • Describing the style instead (for example: mood, genre, instruments, tempo).
  • Keeping your prompt focused on the type of music you want, not who it should sound like.

The music doesn’t match what I expected

AI music generation supports multiple languages for prompts. Language availability may vary by region and may change over time. If your prompt doesn’t work as expected:

  1. Try writing your prompt in English.
  2. Keep prompts short and specific.
  3. Avoid references to artists, songs, or branded content.

FAQs

Is this feature free?

Available to all, but limits may vary by plan.

Can I download the generated audio?

This depends on the export options for your design type. If you can export the design (e.g., as an MP4), the audio is included.

Which languages are supported?

Language availability depends on the voiceover and generation system and may differ by region. Check out AI music generation: usage and languages to learn more.

Can I use this for commercial purposes?

Yes. You can use AI-generated music and sound effects in both commercial and personal projects. This includes use in:

  • Marketing materials
  • Social media content
  • Advertisements
  • Presentations
  • Videos and other creative projects

However, there are a few important limitations:

  • You do not own the generated audio.
  • You cannot sell, resell, or sublicense the track on its own as a standalone product.
  • Your use must comply with Canva’s AI Product Terms and Acceptable Use Policy.

As long as the music is part of a broader project and follows our policies, you’re free to use it commercially. Check out AI music generation: usage and languages to learn more.

Why can’t I see AI audio generation in my team workspace?

If you’re part of a Canva Team or Enterprise workspace, an admin may have turned off audio generation for your team. When this setting is disabled, the music and sound effects generation options are hidden.

Contact your team admin if you think you should have access.
