Use Layouts
Canva recommends layout options based on what’s already on your slide, so you can update your design without starting from scratch.
What Layouts do
Applying a layout rearranges and resizes your elements to fit a professionally designed structure.
Canva suggests layouts based on what’s already on your slide, including:
- Text and images
- Graphics and photos
- Spacing
- Colors on the slide
Layouts are only available for Presentation templates.
To get layout suggestions, unlock the elements on your slide.
If any items are locked, you’ll see a prompt to Unlock all elements before continuing.
Start by creating a design using a template, or you can start from scratch.
Apply a layout to your slide
For layouts to work, there should be at least one graphic, element, or text in your design.
- Open the presentation you want to edit.
- Select the page thumbnail or background.
- From the floating toolbar, select Edit. This opens the Edit Page panel.
- Go to Layouts, then select See all to view all layout options.
- If prompted, select Unlock all elements to get layout suggestions.
- Browse the suggested layouts and select one to apply to your slide.
Canva will adjust your content to fit the layout you select. Try other layouts by selecting a different option.

What are the limitations of Layouts?
- If your page has too many elements, Layouts may not be able to provide suggestions.
- Sometimes images may not properly carry over to the selected layout. You can manually re-add the images as a workaround.
- As Layouts carry over your chosen fonts, text may overlap with elements or images. This can be fixed by changing the font size manually.
- If the selected layout allows only a limited amount of text, Layouts may omit some of your text. Try to reduce the number of text in your design to avoid this.
- If you start with a responsive doc, spreadsheet, or Instagram post, then add a 16:9 page, Layouts will appear, but only preset results are shown.
