Create and manage UML diagrams in Canva Whiteboard

Use Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams in Canva Whiteboards to document system architectures, service flows, and user journeys. These diagrams help teams explain complex structures in a shared, visual workspace. Canva Whiteboard’s infinite canvas expands as you develop your diagram, ideal for real-time collaboration.

Key terms

  • UML (Unified Modeling Language): A standardized visual language for specifying and documenting software systems.
  • Infinite canvas: A workspace that automatically expands in all directions.
  • Node: A shape representing a class, object, or component.
  • Connector: A line or arrow that links nodes to show relationships.

Create a UML diagram

  1. From the homepage, select Whiteboard.
  2. Open the
Templates tab from the side panel.
  3. Search for "UML"  and choose a template (e.g., Class, Sequence, Use Case).
  4. Customize your UML diagram:
    1. Add shapes: Go to the
Elements tab, then drag and drop shapes onto the canvas.
    2. Connect shapes: In the Elements tab, search for “lines” or “connectors”, then drag a line to connect your shapes.
    3. Add labels: Double-click any shape or line to enter text.

Tip: Import diagrams as PDF or SVG to keep lines and text editable. Avoid PNG or JPG, which import as static images.

Collaboration and controls

Permissions and sharing

  • Invite collaborators: Select Share
  • Set permissions: Can edit, Can comment, or Can view
  • Use comments: Tag teammates with @ to request feedback

Organization and brand standards

  • Brand Kit: Apply approved colors for consistency
  • Locking elements: Lock your core system framework to avoid changes
  • Team Folders: Store templates in a shared folder for future use

Desktop vs. mobile differences

  • Desktop: Best for setup and precise mapping. Use Tidy up under Position to align elements.
  • Mobile app: Best for reviewing diagrams or adding Sticky Notes. Some tools (like rulers and guides) aren’t available on mobile

Best practices

  • Layering: Use the Layers panel under Position to fix overlap.
  • Selection: Select only the shape to move it without affecting connectors.
  • Export formats: Use PDF Print or SVG  for the best quality.

Troubleshooting

  • Diagram moves together: Use Ungroup to separate elements.
  • Team member can’t access a whiteboard design: Check if they have the right permissions through their email or workspace.
  • Diagram looks blurry: Use PDF Print or SVG instead of JPG.
