Got an idea? This course is for you. Whether you're starting from scratch or reshaping something you've already built, you'll learn how to turn it into a brand people recognise and trust.

This free course is your first step into the world of brand building with world renowned brand designer James Martin (Made By James). Across seven lessons, he breaks down the MVB mindset: Minimum Viable Brand. It's a scrappier, smarter way to build something real, without waiting for a "perfect" version that doesn't exist.

  • Every great brand starts somewhere — and it starts here. In this intro lesson, you'll meet James Martin (aka Made By James), one of the world's most respected brand designers, as he breaks down what a brand actually is: a recognisable reputation. You'll also get introduced to the MVB mindset (Minimum Viable Brand) and why it's the smartest way to build something that lasts. Whether you're starting from scratch or rethinking what you've already built, this is the foundation everything else will grow from.

  • You know that feeling when you have a great idea but just can't seem to get it out? In this lesson, James unpacks why expressing ideas is so hard, and why thinking alone isn't always productive. You'll learn why creative and entrepreneurial minds can actually struggle more with this than most, and what to do about it. It's the first step to getting your ideas out of your head and into the world.

  • Messy ideas aren't a problem. They're actually where the best innovation happens. In this lesson, James shows you how to embrace the chaos and why your idea doesn't need to be perfect to be worth pursuing. You'll also get three simple questions (who, what, how) that cut through the noise and help you turn a messy concept into something clear and actionable.

  • One of the biggest myths in branding is that you need a huge audience to make an impact. In this lesson, James challenges that thinking and shows why ‘closeness beats cleverness’ every time. You'll work out exactly who your person is (the one you're really here to help) and why getting specific about that is one of the most powerful things you can do for your brand.

  • The best brands aren't built by people with all the answers. They're built by people who ask better questions. In this lesson, James reframes your role from problem solver to problem finder, and introduces two simple forms for making something just 10% better than what already exists. You'll also learn how to write your sentence of intent: a clear, focused statement that captures exactly what your idea is here to do.

  • Waiting for the perfect, final version of your brand? James is here to tell you it doesn't exist, and that's actually great news. In this lesson, you'll learn why a scrappy start is still a start, and how chasing "final" can keep you stuck before you've even begun. The real question is: what's the smallest version of your idea you could put into the world right now?

  • You made it, and you've done more than you might realise. In this final lesson, James walks you through everything you've built across the course and celebrates how far you've come. Then he points you toward the natural next step, so you leave with a clear sense of where your brand is headed and the confidence to keep going.

Why ideas get stuck, and how to get them out of your head
