How to use our poem generator

  1. Start with a template or blank design

    Create a new design or Canva Doc or open an existing one.

  2. Launch Magic Write™

    Access our AI poem generator with the Canva Assistant button on the page’s lower right corner, or type / as a shortcut. In a Canva Doc, tap the + icon. Then select Magic Write from the list.

  3. Form your text prompt

    Describe your poem idea with context, theme, number of verses, and rhyming techniques. For example, “A rhyming acrostic poem about a forest at midnight.”

  4. Generate your poem

    The more detail you give in your prompt, the better. Simply hit Enter and see your generated poem in minutes. Create more options by tweaking your prompts.

With built-in layers of safeguards, our poem generator aims to inspire works of creative genius by any member of our worldwide community. To create a poem, string together words of inspiration in the form of a prompt, and watch as your poem is generated with the touch of a button. All you have to do is edit and truly make it your own.

  • A poem is a very specific style of writing that uses various language techniques to create meaning around a particular idea, situation, or experience. This is different from a story which, although it might include similar techniques, tends to be longer and structured differently. Language techniques to look out for in poems (or incorporate into your own) include:

    • Phonaesthetics: using words that sound good to engage your reader.
    • Diction: or choice of words, means structuring a sentence to create meaning.
    • Imagery: visually descriptive language.
    • Rhyme: where the endings of words on a line of poetry have a similar sound.

  • Start by becoming familiar with a variety of poets and poetic styles, including haiku, free verse, sonnets, and limericks. Once you’re comfortable, learn about different poetic techniques and look for inspiration as you practice. Inspiration can be anything! With our poem generator, the built-in AI-powered system only needs a few words to help you along your poetic path, and with one tap, you’ll find a poem you can edit or simply draw your own inspiration from.

  • Our AI-powered system uses a machine learning model that uses specific data to make its prediction and text generation. This means that the text it generates is entirely based on the instructions you provide, so the more specific those are, the better and more accurate your result will be.   • You can create poems in up to 20 different languages using Magic Write. The languages supported are English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, French, Thai, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Turkish, German, Vietnamese, Chinese, Polish, Dutch, Korean, Czech, Romanian, Malay, and Tagalog text.

  • As long as you follow our terms, you can use the poems you create for any legal or commercial purpose or personal project. If you're planning on using it commercially, there are a few things to be aware of.

    Firstly, please note that you may not have exclusive rights to the text that you've generated. This means that others may also be able to use it.

    Secondly, and most importantly, if you're going to use the text output for any commercial purpose, it's a good idea to seek legal advice. Canva doesn’t provide a guarantee that the text you generate is cleared for use. This is particularly important to note if your output includes text from existing works.

  • Our AI poem generator is free to use. Canva Free users have up to 50 lifetime uses.

    Anyone with a Canva Pro, Canva for Teams, Canva for Nonprofits, or Canva for Education (Admin and Teachers only) subscription has 500 uses per user per month. This limit refreshes for each user every billing month.

  • Our AI poem generator is available in Canva Docs. To gain access, log in to your Canva account and click Docs on the homepage banner. Then, select Doc to open a blank doc template and start writing and using our poem maker.
