How to make your own save the date cards

Your questions, answered

  • A save the date is a card sent to inform wedding guests that you’ve locked down a date and location for your big day and are expecting their attendance. Save the dates are sent months in advance to give guests enough time to prepare.

  • Unlike formal wedding invitations, which include the date and time of the wedding, the reception details, directions to both venues, travel and accommodations information for destination weddings, and an RSVP, save the date cards simply include the time and place of your wedding.

  • The best time to send a save the date card is about six months before the wedding date. But if you are planning a destination wedding, send out your save the date cards ten months to a year before the wedding date to allow guests to prepare for travel and accommodation.

  • You should send a save the date card to anyone you intend to invite to your wedding. If you haven’t finalized your guest list yet, you can print a small sample size or make and send your save the date cards to close friends and family first.

  • It’s your choice! After you create your own save the date card, click Print with Canva and tick the box “Include envelopes in my order” to get them at an additional fee.

If you want to design and print personalized envelopes for any occasion or project, go to wwww.canva.com/envelopes/ to see sample layouts you can customize.

  • No, RSVP cards and save the date cards are not the same. RSVP cards are sent with invitations and the recipients are asked to respond if they are able to make it to the event or not. In contrast, save the date cards are invitations formally asking the recipients to attend the event. A response is not needed for save the date cards.

  • Save-the-dates and invitations do not have to match. Typically, save-the-dates are sent out six to eight months before a wedding, while invitations are sent out six to eight weeks before the event. You may not have settled on your wedding theme eight months out, so style save-the-dates as you want.

  • Save-the-dates typically include the names of the bride- and groom-to-be, an announcement of the wedding, and the date and location of the ceremony. They do not require pictures, but adding a photo can be a fun way to share your excitement with family and friends.

  • Yes! It’s totally fine to send an electronic save the date card. It’s a great way to save money—we all know how expensive weddings can be—and a hassle-free way to keep your guests informed. When you create an online save the date card, you also have the option to send a link to an online RSVP system. This will make it easier to keep track of your guest list.

  • The main difference between these paper finishes is the amount of clay coating on the paper stock. Uncoated paper finish, as its name implies, does not have coacting. This makes the paper retain a rougher and more natural feel.

Matte and glossy paper finishes have clay coating to give them a smoother finish. A matte finish contains an ample amount of clay coat, making it easy to write on. A glossy finish, on the other hand, contains more clay coating and the paper stock is passed through metal rollers to give it a more shiny and vibrant finish.

  • Not at all. It’s just that most save the date cards are created for weddings. In fact, you can use save the date cards when planning any type of event where you want the attendees to know about the event way ahead of time. A few examples are retirement parties, class reunions, product launches, anniversaries, birthday parties, and a lot more.

  • Unfortunately, we do not provide samples for print orders at this time. However, you can order a smaller batch to see if your chosen card stock, size, and finish are to your liking.

  • The One Print, One Tree initiative is just one of the ways we are making our printing solutions more sustainable, as part of doing the most good that we can through our Two-Step Plan. So, how does it work? Simple: for every print order you make with us, we will plant one tree. For more information visit here.
