Always stay on brand with Canva AI

Brand consistency is easy when you're creating one design – but once you’re creating social posts, presentations, campaign assets, and reports at speed, things get a little trickier, especially when multiple people are involved. Fonts change. Colors get swapped. Layouts become inconsistent.

In this guide, you'll learn how to use Canva AI and Brand Intelligence to create on-brand content faster, bring existing work back into line, and keep that consistency going as your content grows.

You can use this brand kit to practice with as you learn! Please note this exercise will require a Pro or trial Pro account to complete.

Start with brand context

One of the easiest ways to stay on brand is to avoid fixing things later.

Instead of creating content first and updating it afterwards, Canva AI can use your brand as part of the starting point. When your Brand Kit is set up and you're using a relevant Brand Template, Canva AI has stronger brand context to work from, so the first draft is more likely to feel aligned from the start.

Let's start with a simple example.

How to create an on-brand social post:

  1. Open Canva AI from the homepage
  2. Select the + button
  3. Choose Apply Brand
  4. Select your brand
  5. Choose a relevant Brand Template
  6. Select Use Brand Template
  7. Describe what you'd like to create

For example: "Create an engaging 'We're Hiring' Instagram post promoting these two open roles: Senior Art Director and Account Executive."

Canva AI will generate a design using your brand as a reference point.

Quick tip:

Choose a Brand Template that already matches the format you're creating. The closer the starting structure is to your end goal, the less fixing you'll need to do later.

Refine the first draft

AI gives you a starting point, not a finished design.

Once your content is generated, take a moment to shape it into something that feels right for your audience, message, and brand. This is where you move from "good starting point" to "ready to share."

Make adjustments with prompts:

  • "Make the headline slightly punchier."
  • "Adjust the spacing between elements."
  • "Swap the colours while staying within the brand."
  • "Make this feel more polished and professional."

These kinds of edits help you improve the result without rebuilding the design from scratch.

Quick tip:

Ask for one kind of change at a time. You'll usually get better results from a focused prompt than from trying to change everything at once.

Bring existing decks back on-brand

Creating new content is only half the challenge.

Sometimes you're handed a presentation that needs to go out today, and it's clearly not following the brand. You might notice:

  • Incorrect fonts
  • Inconsistent colours
  • Layouts that don't match existing materials

Normally, that means fixing slides one by one. With Canva AI, it can be much faster.

Apply your brand:

  • Open the presentation
  • Open Canva AI from the sidebar
  • Enter the prompt: "Make it on brand"
  • Select the + button
  • Choose Apply Brand
  • Select your brand
  • Choose Use Brand Kit only
  • Select Generate

Canva AI updates the presentation using your brand system, helping create more consistency across the deck.

Quick tip:

Use Brand Kit only when the presentation structure already works and the main issue is styling consistency. If you need a stronger structural starting point, begin from a Brand Template instead.

Add slides from data and research

Presentations rarely stay finished for long. New information arrives, or the narrative needs changing. Someone asks for a different chart based on new data. Instead of building those additions manually, Canva AI can help you expand the deck while keeping your style consistent.

To add a chart from data:

  • Select the slide after where you'd like the new content to appear
  • Enter a prompt like: "Create a new slide after this titled 'Customer Growth' and use this data to add a line chart."
  • Select the + button
  • Choose Import
  • Choose Sheets
  • Upload your file
  • Select Generate

Canva AI can create a chart and style it to match the rest of the presentation.

Add research without leaving your deck:

  • Open Canva AI
  • Select the + button
  • Choose Sources
  • Select Web
  • Enter a prompt

For example: "Research the latest branding and marketing trends and add a new slide."

Canva AI can research information and build a slide that fits the style of the existing deck.

Quick tip:

Ask Canva AI for one slide at a time when you're working with data or research. It's easier to check accuracy, improve the story, and keep the result focused.

Finish with human judgment

Once Canva AI has created the structure, the final decisions are still yours – and this is where your attention is often most valuable. Rather than spending time formatting every slide manually, you can focus on:

  • Improving the story
  • Refining the messaging
  • Adjusting slide order
  • Replacing imagery
  • Strengthening key points

Before you present, do a final check:

  • Does the story flow in the right order?
  • Are the dates, numbers, and claims accurate?
  • Do the charts reflect the source data correctly?
  • Does every slide still feel on-brand?
  • Have you cited any externally sourced facts, charts, or statistics in speaker notes or a final sources slide?

Web research is a useful starting point, but it's still worth checking the original source before you present.

The goal isn't to hand over creative control. It's to spend more time on the decisions that matter most.

One last thing:

Staying on brand becomes much easier when every new piece of content starts with the same foundation. Whether you're creating a social post, updating an existing deck, or building entirely new slides, Canva AI can help carry your brand through the process.

The more you create, the more consistent your content becomes, without needing to manually rebuild your brand every time.
