What you’ll learn

  • Why flat, AI-generated designs can be hard to edit
  • How Magic Layers turns flat images into editable layouts
  • How to update text, colours, and elements
  • How to refine and reuse designs quickly
  • When to use Magic Layers in your workflow

Introducing Magic Layers

Flat designs aren’t built to be edited. Text, images, and backgrounds are merged together, so even simple changes can be difficult to make.

That’s why small updates often turn into full redesigns. Canva's Magic Layers separates those elements for you, so you can edit each part of the design directly.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to take a flat design and turn it into something you can actually work with using Magic Layers — so you can update, refine, and reuse it without starting from scratch.

When to use Magic Layers

Magic Layers is most useful when a design is close — but not quite right.

For example:

  • Updating social posts for different platforms
  • Adapting campaign visuals
  • Editing AI-generated designs
  • Refreshing branding or colours

Instead of starting over, you can make targeted changes.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to take a flat design and turn it into something you can actually work with — so you can update, refine, and reuse it without starting from scratch. We recommend opening the Activity below so you can try it out yourself as you learn.

Turn a flat design into an editable layout

Start with your design

  1. From the Canva homepage, select Magic Layers
  2. Select Select Media
  3. Choose the image you want to work with

Your image will open in a new design and process automatically.

What happens next

Once processed:

  • Text becomes editable
  • Images are separated into layers
  • Backgrounds are isolated

Your media is essentially rebuilt as a Canva design you can work with.

Edit your design

Once your layout is layered, you can start making changes.

This is where the design becomes flexible again.

Edit text

  1. Click into a text element
  2. Update the copy
  3. Adjust font or styling if needed

Change colours

  1. Select an element
  2. Use the colour picker
  3. Apply new colours

Move and resize elements

  1. Select an element
  2. Drag to reposition
  3. Resize using the corner handles

Each part of the design can now be adjusted independently.

Refine the layout

Once your changes are in place, take a moment to adjust the overall layout.

This step is about making the design feel balanced again, so consider things like:

  • Repositioning elements to improve alignment
  • Adjusting spacing so nothing feels crowded
  • Refining scale to create hierarchy and balance

Now that your design matches your creative vision, it's time to share it with the world!

Work with more complex designs

Magic Layers works across different levels of complexity.

A simple layout (text + images) is straightforward to edit.

More complex designs — with textures, layered type, or multiple elements — may require a bit more adjustment, but the process stays the same.
