How to edit videos like a pro using a simple process

8m

Learn how to edit videos like a pro in Canva. Use B-roll, sound effects, and visual effects to create engaging social or brand videos that hold attention.

What you’ll learn

  • What separates a good edit from a great one
  • How to use a simple editing process to improve your videos
  • How to add B-roll to strengthen storytelling
  • How to use sound effects to build depth and emotion
  • How to apply visual effects to polish your final edit

What makes a strong video edit

Most videos already have the core ingredients in place:

  • Visuals that show what’s happening
  • Audio that sets the tone
  • Voiceover or dialogue that carries the message

But using those elements on their own doesn’t always create something memorable.

What makes the difference is how they’re layered together.

A strong edit builds in stages — adding the right elements at the right time so each layer supports the one before it.

Quick tip:

Start with a solid base

Before refining your edit, it helps to understand what’s already there.

In Canva, everything comes together in the video timeline. This is where your footage, audio, and edits are layered and timed.

At a glance:

  • The top layers are your visuals
  • The lower layers are your audio
  • Each layer builds on the one below it

It can look complex at first, but you don’t need to use everything at once.

Most video projects already start with a base structure in place — including:

  • Core footage
  • A backing track
  • Voiceover or dialogue

Quick tip:

That means the pacing and sequence are already doing some of the work for you. From here, the goal isn’t to rebuild your edit. It’s to build on top of it — adding the right elements in the right places.

Add B-roll to support your story

The first level up is B-roll.

B-roll helps bring what’s being said to life visually. As you cut between your main footage and supporting clips, your video becomes easier to follow and more engaging to watch.

How to use it

Use your voiceover or dialogue as your guide.

Look for moments where:

  • Something is described
  • An action is mentioned
  • The tone shifts

Then match that with supporting footage.

Quick tip:

  • If the voiceover mentions sketching → show sketching
  • If it references writing or music → show those moments

How to add B-roll in your Canva timeline

  1. Open the Elements tab
  2. Search for a keyword that matches your scene
  3. Filter by Video
  4. Hover over clips to preview them
  5. Drag a clip into the timeline
  6. Your clip will appear as a new layer above your existing footage

Adjust placement and timing

  1. Drag the clip along the timeline to position it
  2. Drag the edges of the clip to adjust its length
  3. Align the clip with your voiceover

For example, if the voiceover describes specific actions, match each visual moment to those cues.

Quick tip:

Preview and adjust until the timing feels right.

Refine the visual

  1. Select the B-roll clip
  2. Resize it so it fills the frame
  3. Play the sequence to check how it flows

Quick tip:

You’re aiming for alignment between what’s said and what’s shown.

Add sound effects to build depth

Once your visuals are working, the next layer is sound.

Quick tip:

Sound effects help bring your footage to life. They add detail to transitions and make moments feel more immersive.

Add sound effects in the timeline

  1. Go to Elements
  2. Search for a sound
  3. Filter by Audio
  4. Preview the options
  5. Drag a sound effect into the timeline

The audio will snap into place alongside your footage.

Adjust timing and levels

  1. Drag the audio clip to align it with your footage
  2. Trim the clip to match the moment
  3. Select the clip and adjust the volume (e.g. lower to around 30)
  4. Add a fade so it eases in and out

Quick tip:

Play back your edit and adjust until the sound supports the moment without overpowering it.

Add visual effects to polish your edit

The final level up is visual effects.

This is where your video starts to feel more intentional. Effects help shape the look, pacing, and overall feel of your edit .

Add transitions in the timeline

  1. Select a video track in the timeline
  2. Select the ••• (more icon)
  3. Select Add transition
  4. Choose a transition from the Transitions panel
  5. Adjust the duration and direction in the Duration section

If you don’t see your timeline, select Show page thumbnails to reveal it.

Quick tip:

Transitions are only available in video designs. On mobile, they’re only available on video templates.

Use transitions with intention

Place transitions where there’s a natural break in your edit, such as:

  • A change in scene
  • A shift in pace
  • A transition between ideas

Quick tip:

They work best when they support the edit rather than draw attention to themselves.

Add layered effects

  1. Select a clip in your timeline
  2. Duplicate the clip
  3. Trim the duplicated layer to a short duration (around 1 second)
  4. Move it slightly along the timeline

This creates a layered effect.

Refine the effect

  1. Resize the duplicated clip to focus on a specific area
  2. Reduce the opacity (e.g. around 25)
  3. Preview to check how it blends

Add texture and movement

  1. Open Elements
  2. Search for a texture (e.g. “film burn”)
  3. Drag it onto the timeline above your clip
  4. Adjust speed (e.g. increase to 2x)
  5. Trim to a short duration
  6. Lower opacity to blend it into the footage

Quick tip:

Short layers (around 0.5–1 second) help create a more dynamic feel.

Bring it all together

At this point, your edit should include:

  • B-roll supporting your visuals
  • sound effects adding depth
  • visual effects shaping the look and feel

These layers work together to make your video more engaging and easier to follow.

Quick tip:

You can apply this same process to different types of content, including:

  • Social and brand videos
  • Product content
  • Storytelling formats

One last thing

Editing like a pro isn’t about adding more — it’s about adding the right things in the right order.

Once your base edit is in place, a few thoughtful additions can change how the whole video feels.

That’s a process you can reuse and refine every time you edit.
