Your LinkedIn profile is one of the most important touchpoints for successful networking and building your career. First impressions matter and with so many millions of people on LinkedIn, customizing your profile can make your more recognizable and memorable.
Did you know, according to LinkedIn, members with visual profiles receive 21 times more views and nine times more connection requests? So, why not take a moment to show you care about presentation?
It’s time to start approaching your LinkedIn profile like an expert – showing your connections you’re serious about your career and ready to connect. First, make sure your profile setup is fully completed.
Let’s see how we can make your headshot even better. Capturing a good headshot where you look friendly, approachable, and professional can take a few attempts but it’s worth the effort. Most smartphone cameras are good enough to capture something hi res enough to use, and often there’s good enough lighting at home. Try using natural light in the morning or use a well-lit room at home.
The next tool is only available for Canva Pro or Canva for Teams users. You want to use the Background Remover tool – well worth signing up for the 30-day free trial just for this.
So once you’ve imported your photo into Canva, and used the Background Remover tool, try filling the background with a vibrant color.
Select the background and choose the color tile. Start with something simple and eye-catching, like a delightful yellow or a calming light blue and customize to best fit your style. There’s no need to limit yourself to one color, but make it subtle – less is often more.
It’s easy to ignore your LinkedIn banner but it is a great opportunity to show more of yourself, your experience and what you’re looking for. Start inspired and type ‘LinkedIn Banner’ into the search bar in Canva to explore some templates.
A lot of them have a photo in them, which can be a fun way to use different headshots that relate to each other. Just avoid using the exact same photo. Alternatively, you could use imagery from your work, whether that’s a design folio, or a campaign you helped create.
You can explore elements and search for imagery that matches your industry, work or experience. Choose images that reflect your personality or the kind of work you want to do. Be aspirational and show your goal, it’s much more exciting.
Once you’ve finished designing your new profile photo and banner, upload them to LinkedIn and review your profile. Check the colours work well together and make sure your banner looks good in context and resonates with your profile photo. You can always continue customizing your designs in Canva and, if you’re feeling inspired, update your profile regularly.
