Reels ads have seconds to earn attention. They need to make the product, benefit, or idea clear before someone scrolls past.

Start with a template for Reels

Start by choosing a template for Reels that fits your product, message, or campaign.

Look for a clear focal point and enough space for the key message. Reels move quickly, so viewers should be able to grasp the idea at a glance. Choose a template that makes it easy to spotlight your benefit or offer – not necessarily the most detailed design.

Try this:

  1. Search Canva for a template for Reels, or browse a range of template options right here.
  2. Choose a template that suits the product or message you want to promote.
  3. Open it in the editor.

Make the opening worth watching

A hook gives viewers a reason to stay — right from the beginning of your reel. It can introduce a question, a problem, a benefit, a product moment, or a point of view that feels relevant to your audience.

Use a hooks template to explore different ways to begin. It contains pre-built hook structures that you can adapt with your own product, message, visuals, and call to action.

Double-click into a hook to see the example in more detail, then customize it to suit your needs and audience.

Try changing:

  • The opening question or statement
  • The problem or benefit you lead with
  • The first visual people see
  • The call to action

A strong hook doesn’t need to explain everything – it just needs to make the next moment worth watching. You can find the Hooks Studio here, with a range of templates ready for you to customize.

Quick tip:

Make your hook specific. Rather than “Try our new product,” lead with the benefit, problem, or outcome your audience is likely to care about.

Make the design your own

Now it’s time to make the template yours. Replace the sample visuals with your own product photos, video clips, or creative assets – or simply browse the Canva Elements library or fire up Canva AI to generate something specific. Update the text so your message is clear, relevant, and easy to scan.

Add simple movement if it helps the idea land. You could use a subtle animation or a video background to bring attention to the product or opening message. Keep the motion purposeful: it should support the story, not compete with it.

Check your design:

  • Is the product or offer easy to understand?
  • Is the main message visible early?
  • Is the text easy to scan?
  • Does the call to action make the next step clear?
  • Does the motion add clarity or energy?

Quick tip:

Keep your message focused. One clear benefit and one clear next step are usually more effective than trying to communicate everything at once when you’re short on time.

Adapt your creative for other placements

If you need another size, use Canva’s Resize tool to adapt your reel design for other placements on Meta technologies without starting over.

Resize gives you a useful starting point, but each version will still need a quick review. Reposition text, visuals, or calls to action where needed so they work naturally in the new format.

Try this:

  1. Open Resize from your completed reel design.
  2. Choose the placement you need.
  3. Review the adapted design before using it.

Quick tip:

Check that important visuals and text still have enough breathing room after resizing.

Check your design with Meta Design Check

Before publishing, use Meta Design Check to review how your creative works for the intended placement.

From the Canva editor, open Apps and search for Meta Design Check. Select Reels as the placement, and you’ll be able to view your design against Meta’s best practices.

Turn on Show safe zone to check that important text, logos, and product visuals will not be covered by Reels interface elements. Then work through the recommendations and make any useful updates.

When the app shows the green Great result, your design has passed the app’s best-practice checks.

Quick tip:

Meta Design Check checks whether your Canva design follows Facebook and Instagram best practices, but it doesn’t review design content or guarantee advertising-platform approval. You’re still responsible for ensuring your ad meets Meta Advertising Standards and Community Standards.

Try this:

  1. Open Apps in the Canva editor.
  2. Search for and select Meta Design Check.
  3. Select Reels.
  4. Turn on Show safe zone.
  5. Review the recommendations and update your design where needed.
  6. Recheck the design until you reach the green Great result.

Prepare to publish

When you’re happy with your design, select Share design, then choose Meta Ads.

Before continuing, make one final check:

  • Is the text accurate?
  • Does the creative match the placement?
  • Is the message clear in the opening moments?
  • Are the offer and call to action correct?
  • Is the destination or landing page ready?

Your ad is now designed, checked, and ready to prepare for publishing in Reels.
