A fundamental step to creating an engaging story is building characters and engaging the reader with their journey. In this lesson plan, students will learn how to analyze complex characters and how these types of characters can help develop a plot line within a text.

Within this lesson plan, students will take part in group work and design activities in order to fully understand how characters are developed through literary devices.

In this free and downloadable lesson plan students will learn to:

  • Develop a greater understanding of character development. The group activities are designed to help students understand how a specific character changes throughout a novel and how important building characters are in any work of fiction.
  • Analyze the progression and regression of characters. Using supporting evidence from the chosen text, students will learn to identify language and structure techniques used to help communicate a character’s journey.

Students will then be given an activity, where they can use Canva to create their own visual poem. To take part in this lesson, students will require the following:

  • Access to a computer or mobile device
  • Internet connection
  • A Canva login

To take the lesson one step further, there are also homework activities included. Once students have completed this analysis of a character, the teacher may want to assign them to do the “From Page to Stage” Canva lesson to deepen their understanding of the character and the novel.
